A failed experiment (sigh)

In light of the rising gas prices, I recently vowed to undertake an experiment and drive 55 mph and shift at 3K for a whole tank in an effort to average 30 mpg for the tank. Thus far, it has proven impossible for me to exercise that level of restraint. For example, I filled up today in Coalinga. I started driving toward Firebaugh (~60 miles away) to teach an afternoon class, decided to take an alternate road, and ended up enjoying the hell out of myself on the twisties. Full throttle pulls out of the turns proved impossible to resist. This car is too damn much fun to NOT drive hard. The road to astronomical gas bills and ****-poor gas mileage is paved with good intentions . Guess I'll try next time...

The best mileage i have ever gotten in an evo in probably close to 20K miles is 25MPG.. And that was because it was all highway driving in Arizona.. (Which is very flat, straight, and boring)

I usually get 13-15MPG...

so, You are not alone.

Very nice. I really don't think I could do that either. There is no point in having the car if you are not going to drive it.

Don't even bother trying, just buy a car that can't go fast and put the Evo in the garage if you want to get good gas milage. This car was meant to be driven the way Jenna Jameson was meant to get.....well you get the point.

It's a tool, use it the way it's supposed to be used =)

my experiment was turning off my profec, thus limiting myself to 12psi, but I found myself turning it back on and up to 21psi within 5minutes of every trip ... Errr, I mean

I did show restraint during my last tank full and it did not make enough of a difference to be worth it.

i feel you. just as a test today on the drive from boston to philly i tried to stay off boost, but it was damn tough this car is just way too much fun. ended up getting 20.4 miles per gallon. this car is too much fun. meanwhile showing some restraint i got better mileage than i could have ever dreamed in my jeep.

Pour 2 gallon of Toluene into your tank and 12 gals of 91. That'll make 94.28 octane fuel. You WILL get better gas mielage and your car will ACCLERATE like never before...

You can't really pick that up at the local auto store, or can you?

+1, I made the same vow during last weekend's fillup to do the same thing... My goal was at least hit 28mpg...given I drive mostly highway anyways...
I was doing well until I met an Audi that wanted to have some fun today coming home from work...damn, I wish I can show much more self restraint.

so looks like I'm looking at 24mpg once again on this tank given I don't have fun anymore until it's empty.

Gas prices in my area have actually gone down quite a bit in the past week. Premium 93 oct was 3.14 and now it's down to 2.88 a gallon. I'm pretty happy about that

Still $3.20 for Socal ... My average mileage is 17-18 on half local/half highway, and 20 for highway, 15 or 16 for local. :-P

I made it to a similar number with a good 75% being freeway. Weird thing was that I did my normal every once in a while run up to 100 at WOT to break up the boredom and still got that kind of mileage. My current tank isn't doing so great though, sitting at 90 miles and the indicator at 1/2 tank
