Oil Change

Hey guys,

Quick question... I need to get my oil changed, but Im stuck between wanting to do it myself, or just buying Mobile 1, taking it somewhere, and having them do it.

I would have no problem doing it myself, but I don't have an oil filter... I read somewhere to stick with the OEM filter, and I don't have one of those.. so..

What should I do?

buy the oil filter from Mitsubishi or buy the high performance one from puralotor at pepboys. Then buy Royal Purple oil for the price you would pay someone to do it. This way you do it yourself, get better oil for the price of or less than having soeone do it.

If you're in a hurry and you're near a mitsubishi dealership, just drop by the parts department and pick one up. If it's to far away, stop by auto zone and get the mobile 1 filter....it's pricey at around $10 but it's a good filter.

Now, Im gonna get flamed for this but I'll try and give you this piece of advice anyway. I would not use mobile 1. I would use Castrol Syntec "MADE IN GERMANY" 0W-30, it's a Full synthetic . Make sure it says MADE IN GERMANY on the back. Black bottle, 0W-30 will be in red. Check out bobistheoilguy.com and you will see that the german castrol syntec out performs the mobile 1. You can get the German castrol at auto zone while you're picking up the filter.

Of course you will have the Mobile 1 loyalist say that mobile 1 is the ONLY way to go....cause the little sticker on the oil cap says "mobile 1 used at the factory".
hummm, wonder how much mobile 1 payed to have Mitsubishi do that?

Anyway........that's my advice dude...now let the mobile 1 mofia flaming begin!

Get a crush washer for the oil drain plug too

There are lots of threads on oil -- I would research it rather than taking a recommendation in this thread.

Good luck.

If you do it yourself you can make sure to completely drain the oil out. Those quick lube places just want to get rid of you and move on to the next one so they are not going to take the time to drain it right. If you don't drain the oil clean you are leaving alot of gunk behind and defeating the purpose of the oil change.

I personally rinse the engine with half a quart of clean oil before putting the drain plug back on because I love my car!

Oh one more thing I did that has made changing my oil ten times easier. While your at auto zone or Pep boys...look for this thing called "Sure drain" made by Fram. You will need to replace teh copper ring anyway on your drain plug when you change your oil...this thing come with it and it replaces your stock drain plug. Once it's tightened you don't take it off, you screw this adapter onto it and it releaces a valve and it lets the oil drain. When you're done, you unscrew the adapter, and screw the brass cap on. It's awesome. The best part about it is that you can drive you car around to get the oil hot..then when you take off the brass cap and screw on the drain adapter, it has about a 10" orange hose that you point to where you want the oil to go and it rushes out of that hose..not a drop of hot oil on your hands! Best $10 I've spent on my Evo.

Hey, I see that your sig says that you have an APS BOV. Do you like it? What differences do you notice over stock? Did you have any problems with boost leaks after you installed it?

Well, the stocker didn't make any noise, the APS (when completely stock, cept for bov) makes like a flutter noise, can't really hear it.. but if ur outside the car and someone is boosting by.. u will hear it.

IMO, it seems it holds boost better, but I can't really tell with a stock engine.

None the less, I like it.

Yep. Buy a case of Mobile 1 from Wal Mart and take your car to any oil change place (The Evo takes about 4 quarts and change). Big O Tires charges me $20 for labor plus the cost of a filter (~$8). Total cost to me is about $45. I used to change my oil when I was younger, but at this point in my life it's worth $20 to not have to crawl under my car, get my hands dirty, and dispose of old oil. I get it done about every 5K miles (which is about every 2 months).

You know, I really don't recall looking for a part number..I just grabbed one out of the display then had at auto zone. I checked the threads and everything and it matched up. Im not sure if there's really a difference in oil plugs with different car manufacturers.
