open intake filter under hood? vs stock airbox

open intake filter draws hot air when the hood is closed therefore less horsepwer vs stock sealed air box with drop in filter....right???
give me some feedback

I can tell you that the a/f ratio on the street stays close to the same between the two.

i added an aftermarket intake, with no tuning, and my car traped 1mph faster than it did without one.
i am looking foward to see what it can do with some other aftermarket parts added (tbe)

arc with no tuning - https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=167877

The ARC intake is an induction box, so it is not really what he's asking about. I would recommend this box due to its design, but remember that it still sucks in hot engine air. Dyno results have to be taken with a grain of salt, because they are done with the hood open, which alleviates this problem. Trapping 1mph different can be attributed to anything...a better driving...cooler temps...better track conditions...or just random coincidence. I routinely fluctuate between 110-113mph between runs, so a 1mph difference is insignificant.

I see a lot of places have this intake for $350+, but for some reason this place has it for less than 200:

I think it's definitely worth $189, but I wouldn't mess with it for $350 when that's about the same as an alky kit or a flash+mbc+gauge...

No. All those pretty holes in your front bumper actually flow air through your engine bay as the car moves and are not just for asthetics.

I have heard that just an intake alone will result in a slightly lower peak horsepower, but have yet to see it dyno proven. This doesn't mean I'm not wrong, I just have yet to seen one.

intake with a tune yes, no tune then stock box. Stock box is also a lot quieter. U wont suck in to much hot air when ur moving the intercooler will cool it back down

there was a thread in the Dynoflash forum....stock intake vs. HKS RS (I think). The results were similar power and the steady A/F readings going to the stock filter. The Vishnu guys also say the stock filter is fine. If I understand correctly the crossover point is around 320 whp or so to make any actual benefit with the aftermarket intake.

Yet all the FQ's use the stock box, including the FQ400. Maybe it's designed slightly different, but it looks close if not exactly the same one.

I think the comment made about the tests being done with the hood open is a great point. I've posted many times before that we measured signicantly different temps inside and out side the box on warm to hot days. Never really measured cooler days yet, but I'll bet it's similar.

May be the question becomes whether the increased potential airflow of the cone or other styles, overcome the alledged "restrictive design" of the stock box and it's cooler outside air temps.
