Here's my take on it.. People definitely seem surprised that I paid 30k at the time for a mitsubishi, many are more impressed at its performance than its appearance. For the most part, it doesn't look like a 30k car.. If I'm hanging out "bumming" with friends who are younger than I am, there is a perception that I'm wealthy.
I think a person's perception of whether a person thinks your rich or not, is more about how you present yourself to others, the car can be part of it, but its also your appearance INSIDE the car.. if you look young, then they think your a rich kid who got a "gift", if you look older then its just another 30k car (Since that's around how much a decent car is nowadays)
I'll let you in on a little secret.. the wealthiest people usually don't look it.. and the people who do look it, are generally not wealthy.. Its noticing the details about a person that usually you can tell.

Yep thats so true.
If ya see me cruising around say hello.....
My best friend went from a 2002 Porsche Cabriolet to a 2004 STi, and then on last Thursday ordered a 2006 MR. He's totaly hooked on these type of cars now. He hangs out with extremely wealthy people, and even one of his friends who owns three Ferraris thinks his STiis cool. This guy traded him cars for a day, his STi for a Modena Spyder. Sounds like a good trade to me. Anyway, my point is, anyone who truly loves cars probably has respect for 4 bangers like ours, no matter how rich they are.
I don't consider myself rich just because I drive an Evo. I worked hard to get the money to pay for it. But my fellow co-workers on my hospital unit, I am a registered nurse, get surprised when they find out I own a $30,000 sports car. Even when I show pictures they think I spent a fortune on it. I guess it is a fortune depending how you look at it. Some think it is a fortune, but I consider it cheap considering the performance bargain.

I guess people don't realize the performance capabilities of the car.

i completely agree with you. for the fact that i am a young female, most people ask if my mom (the parental) paid for my car. how bout no, i have never not had a job. if not one, 2 at a time at first 3. she can barely afford her house. this is my hobby this is what i like. there for i spend my money on my car. people are funny!

Yeah! My friends and co-workers though I was uninformed about car when I bought an 03 Mitsubishi called Evo instead of getting a BMW, Lexus or Mercede. A year later they want to put me in mental hospital when I bought another Mits Evo MR for my daily drive. They keep asking me "what is good about that car that you like it so much?".
I told them "you don't understand!".
I don't care about rich but do care about happiness. It's not neccessary to be rich to be happy.

Well, the other day I was parked outside a friend's house and we were working in the garage. These kids came up and were starring and pointing at the EVO "oohhh, ahhh." They then looked at me and said, "hey how much did that cost?" "Did it cost a million dollars?" I was like, uhm, well, not quite that much!
As far as respect goes...I've been taking my older brother around to a few dealerships to look at new cars (nissan, subi, bmw, mazda). It has been like instant respect every time. Each salesguy has asked about it..."is that one of those EVOs?" Two of them have actually asked if they could go see it after we get done test driving and what not!
