found this on a subaru forum.....hmm. what do you think
just wanted to see what people thought of this i have neither an evo or a sti but i am going to buy a evo9 or 05 sti next week.... please help me choose. thanks
Anyone who thinks an EVO is a better car is a less than Amatuer Driver! I have never lost to an evo in an autocross or drift event and as far as monster power, take a look at this months TURBO magazine - 720WHP STi takes 1st place against the worlds fastest EVO's. Out of the Box an EVO might have a little quicker feel and less understeer but on a gravel/iced road the STi will absolutely dominate. As far as daily driver the STi is gonna last longer, looks better inside and out, and is a much more high quality built machine.
The Tranny's don't even compare - drop your clutch in the STi all day is OKAY, try it in the Mitsu and get ready for a tranny bomb. That 720HP STi has stock tranny in it too. Subaru's whole AWD system is far far better.
Leh Keen from GSC Motorsports (Porche GT3 Race Car Driver) did a shootout with a heavily modded track EVO and STi to find the STi is a superior handling car with the same mods as an EVO. Find his post, it's on here.
Only reason EVO has more oversteer out of the box is because thats the way they designed it, as subaru designed their car to have a little understeer to help maintain control while on off-road like conditions.
I have 58,000 miles of hardcore daily driving, gravel roading, drifting, autocrossing and all the paint chips, dents, scratches to prove it. I have put 2,200 miles on my cousin's EVO with intentions to test it vs. my car and I found that the subaru has a wider range of control when out of control. Bringing the STi too far around is easy to correct with a counter steering lock turn and using the throttle to bring ya back. While the EVO tends to oversteer too far too easily and doesn't have a smart enough all wheel drive system to bring ya back, hitting the throttle at that same point will not straighten you back out but push you more the way ya don't wanna go.(sounds confusing? read it again)
Last Point, Go to a Group-N or any other Rally Race and you will see WRX/STi out number EVO's 10 to 1, if ya even see an evo there!
You might not push your car like I do but it's nice to have a car that has most overall potential. The EVO block might be able to push more peak hp but the crawford racing block fixes that. And if ya got that kinda money your gonna wanna tune a racing block anyway. If ya Tune the EVO's block that high your gonna need to spend more money than a crawford block buying a Tranny to handle the power.
Get a test drive in an STi and see for yourself, drop the clutch at 5K and get ready to pound your next gear. Get Rid of the RubberMaid POS they mitsu calls a rally car!

so, the fact that the WRX has been selling in the US for about 9 years or so doesn't have any affect on the 3 years the Evo has been selling in US? HHmm, sheer numbers, 9 years is more than 3, so obviously, there's going to be more WRX's. People still buy more because they cost cheaper cause they've been in the US for so long and people are accustomed to that car as well, where most people who see an Evo thinks its a Subaru anyway cause it hasn't been in the US that long.
So, he also doesn't mention about having to take out the engine to do any type of mod, let alone, taking out your intake manifold just to change spark plugs (overstatement, to cover my a$$, but you get the idea).
True, interior isn't the best, but that's not what you buy a car for anyway. you buy this type of car for the performance. i've test driven both, Evo by far is the better car.
Maintenance costs are expensive for both, a little more for the STI because of the Boxer type engine.
Your best bet is to test drive both and get what you like. Its your preference. We can only give you our Bias Statements.

I dont even wanna say anything....::ahem::: ::cough::: ::cough:: where are his credentials? He obviously biased, also only points out a couple of races. Lets take a closer look at history shall we. But ::cough:: I really dont wanna get into it.
Read MotorTrend and Car & Driver. Each one chooses a different car. But the one that chosses the STI soes so on a " more tossable" distinction of the STI. The read WHY they say that. "The Evo does what it's designed to do" , all 4 wheels hold, if the can't all 4 break free at once. In other words they like the fact the STI could slide on turns. The Evo beats out the STI on the same numbers that MotorTrend showas the STI higher.
SO WHO"S RIGHT???
Fact is the Evo is far easier to mod and pick up any IF ANY difference in power.
Seems to me like Shiv at Vishnu reported feeling that the Evo IX was considerably underated.
Either car is a great buy. One thing for sure, No other import car has had more positive reviews by independent professionals
To quote one in the UK:
"Consider, then, that while the Evo IX does all this, it is also keeping you safe with one of the most sophisticated four-wheel-drive systems ever put on sale. Finally, take into account that its design has benefited from more than 10 years of competition in, and often at the front of, the world rallying scene.
It is at about this time that the Subaru Impreza lobby will rear its tediously predictable head. While the Impreza is similar in design it is dramatically different in execution and no truly serious driver faced with the choice between the two could ever drive home in a Subaru. A show-off? Yes. A driver, no."
I wouldn't be quite as harsh as he is, but then, I'M not a professional driver either. :-)
Good Luck

dude, seriously get the Evo. otherwise you are going to lose your a$$ when you trade your sti in a month for the Evo. I personally know 4 people who have traded their stis for Evos and I don't know anyone that has done the opposite.
Somebody did finally build a 700 whp sti, but I guarantee he could have built an Evo with that much power for half the budget. Just look at how many 700+ whp Evos there are around. The Evo takes much better to modifications and is a far better bang for your buck.
