Evo IX envy..........some thoughts from an Evo VIII owner.
You also have to remember that the 9 has a bigger turbo. If the 8 and 9 had the same turbo then peak power would be the same. Curve would be different because of MIVEC. If you were to take an 8 and 9 and upgrade them the same, the 9 will always be ahead. The playing field starts to even out once you start removing turbos and upgrading.

I agree, I had the option to buy an 09 with 300 miles for $28500 good price but, found an 04 with 4500 miles with some nice mods for $23400 still smells new and I pay cash for it. The money that I saved, will be invest on my new 60" Sony plasma. I need to keep wife happy.
For me it's not what you got, it's what you got under the hood.
You evo could have the best paint job, rims, body kit the list goes on and on.
It's what you mod your car with, I think thats what set's it apart from the other's.
The only evo's i would pay my respect's to are the one's that came before the US SPEC. EVO

Here's what I think is the crux of the IX envy.
My car is stock now and over the next few months to a year I plan on getting the typical bolt on parts: full TBE, flash, cams, and boost controller.
Obviously from that point on the next step would be a larger turbo, but I think most Evo owners have their cars at the max bolt on level (e.g. Buschur Stage 4) from what I see it sigs for a number of reasons (driveability, reliability, and cost) and herein is what I think makes me and maybe other Evo VIII owners envious of the IX.
It looks like an equivalently modified IX compared to a VIII makes a good amount of horsepower more.
Maybe when the larger turbo upgrades to the IX are available things will even out, but how many do have the time and cash for a turbo upgrade?
Personally, I'm the type of person that has the mentality of "I wish I waited for that" or "maybe I can wait a little longer", so it does irk me that I bought my VIII towards the end of the cycle of the VIII (August) knowing about the the IX coming soon.
Was there envy from 03-04 Evo owners when the 05s with the ACD and 10.5 hotside came out?
Knowing me I would have been upset, but I'm speaking fro myself.
Maybe my mentality = impatience?
But at least I did get 0% and over the course of 4-5 years at about 3.9% - 4.9% APR, I saved about $2,000 - $2,500 in interest payments.
Just my 2 cents.

If the grand scheme of things, the IX is not that different than the VIII. The body and interior are nearly identical and the power of the two is very very close. Maybe the IX has 10% more power, but it's hardly in a different league. I think the Evo X is where there will be big changes, either for better or worse.
I love the 9 and sure glad I waited. I was going to buy an 8 back when my frind got his in the summer but decided to wait a couple months. Now, I should be getting my 9mr within the upcoming weeks hopefully (could've had it already but the dealer lowballed me for my car when we were starting on the paperwork) .
The cost of the 9 is much greater than my current 8. Otherwise, I would have waited for the 9. The 0% financing and invoice pricing is what got me in the seat of the Evo. The 9 doesn't have any incentives even close to that. Plus I needed a car that is more practical and reliable than my car at the time.
