Evo IX envy..........some thoughts from an Evo VIII owner.
I admit envy. I wish I had a stock IX that I could go hit 12.7s with, then slap on the same mods I have on my MR and run 11.8s...maybe even 11.99 on pump gas. I am almost positive we will see 12.0s with tbe/mbc/tune on IXs with 93oct only.

I've driven a bunch of VIII's and I gotta say I love eveything bout my IX except no HID's without the damn SSL package. The seats are awesome lookin, the bumper rocks, the acceleration stock vs. stock is well different, the dyno #'s seem to be amazing etc... etc... I'm so glad I didn't buy an 05 leftover like I almost did.

Here's what I think is the crux of the IX envy.
My car is stock now and over the next few months to a year I plan on getting the typical bolt on parts: full TBE, flash, cams, and boost controller.
Obviously from that point on the next step would be a larger turbo, but I think most Evo owners have their cars at the max bolt on level (e.g. Buschur Stage 4) from what I see it sigs for a number of reasons (driveability, reliability, and cost) and herein is what I think makes me and maybe other Evo VIII owners envious of the IX.
It looks like an equivalently modified IX compared to a VIII makes a good amount of horsepower more.
Maybe when the larger turbo upgrades to the IX are available things will even out, but how many do have the time and cash for a turbo upgrade?
Personally, I'm the type of person that has the mentality of "I wish I waited for that" or "maybe I can wait a little longer", so it does irk me that I bought my VIII towards the end of the cycle of the VIII (August) knowing about the the IX coming soon.
Was there envy from 03-04 Evo owners when the 05s with the ACD and 10.5 hotside came out?
Knowing me I would have been upset, but I'm speaking fro myself.
Maybe my mentality = impatience?
But at least I did get 0% and over the course of 4-5 years at about 3.9% - 4.9% APR, I saved about $2,000 - $2,500 in interest payments.
Just my 2 cents.

I feel lucky to have been able to get in one of the first batch of 03's. It seems to me most of the threads either pronouncing "best year eva" or "dam I wish I waited" seem to be 05' owners.
The 03' is paid off, the tranny and T-case will get a rebuild and RS front dif in another 10k or so. Suspension has already been upgraded and the motor will get a re-build and perhaps a IX turbo. No MIVEC, unless I swap an entire motor and ECU (not out of the question), but I'll survive with 264's.
The best part of the "Evolution series" IMO is the constant stream of improved retro-fittable OEM parts for the ct9a platform, allowing for airframe type of maintenance.
We'll see what goodness the X brings, but you can't go wrong with any year if you like to work on cars or have a reasonable budget.
Here was my thought process in deciding between waiting a month for the IX or getting the VIII:
1.) Out of the box I was SURE the IX was going to make more power. With the variable valve timing I was SURE if the aftermarket companies could crack the MIVEC it would make HUGE #'s out of the box and more importantly HUGE gains in the low end. It was just a matter of if and when (obviously they already have). +1 for the IX
2.) Once you got into BIG #'s though I predict the IX is NOT going to make as much power as the VIII. The MIVEC head is going to get in the way, either mechanically or no ECU's out there to control the MIVEC (only two I can think of that could possibly do this, is the Power FC or an expensive MOTEC unit). This'll lead to a head swap to a non-MIVEC unit. +1 for the VIII...we'll wait to see if I'm wrong on this one.
3.) just another thing to break and servicing. Although VVT doesn't normally have a history of failing components or anything it's just one more thing (MIVEC) to break and worry about. Finding knowledgable techs to work on and trouble shoot it will be a pain. I mean just read some of the horror stories on how tech put the crankshat on 180deg off...+1 for the VIII, which leads to...
4.) Parts. The BIG deciding factor for me at least as I plan on keeping the car til it rots apart. the non-MIVEC 4g63 has been around for 10+ years. Although there are slight differences thoughout it's evolution (hey! I made a pun!) a lot of the parts are interchaneable. The MIVEC 4g63 has new pistons, new rings, new headgasket etc. service parts for a one year (roughly) model will become hard to find. +1 for the VIII.
No doubt the IX is a wonderful machine but, for me at least, the VIII makes more sense.

You can't worry about it. Just enjoy your car and your 0%.

i bought my viii in august. i wish i had the opprotunity to get it earlier.
no matter what evo you get, you're getting an incredible car. as i see it, it really comes down to the asthetics out of the box, and pricing. sure the ix makes a little more horsepower and has mivec, but 0% financing was on hell of a deal.
so theoretically, that is another $2000 for parts
my advice is to take your budget into consideration, either way, you won't be missing out.
-edit- i cannot spell to save my life today.

not knockin you man, but that sounds like the worse case of envy. Saying they wont have a computer is a pointless statement. 3 companies have already been tuning mivec and have had great results. The valve timing will give you more control on the highend with a big turbo. Do you really think that AEM does not have an evo 9 in their bay working on an ecu for it considering the VIII was their #1 selling ems? I know that when I had my turbo civic with ls block and big turbo, we added a vtec head and gained over 60 whp. Not being able to get parts is another, you could get pistons made right now if you wanted.
