How hard would it be to get one of these cars titled, registered, and insured in Illinois?

Mark, I am from Fayetteville and White Lake, go to UNC Chapel Hill, so were not far from me. My roomate is from Greensboro, and we go there alot to concerts and to visit her family.

Nnorris7413, here is what you do. Call your DMV, or even better, go there. Tell them you have a friend, say friend, in the service who brought over a car from Japan and it has been titled in Florida. Then tell them you want to buy it, and ask them if it would be a problem. The key thing is that the cars will have a Japanese VIN, otherwise, there is really no difference.

What you will need to look out for is EPA testing and inspecting. Once you get the car, it may need a catalytic converter added to it to pass a sniffer test. Once all that is taken care of, call your insurance and tell them you have a specialty vehicle, that does have a titled and is registered, but its a non typical vehicle, and you would like to insure it for a certain value. State Farm ro Nationwide should be able to do this, but I imagine it varies from state to state.

If anyone is interested in any of the Evo's, send me a PM and I can give you a price quote. I'm pretty sure he can get any Evo from Japan, its just a matter of how much it is going to cost.

I apologize for bumping an old thread but I am curious is there is an update. Did anyone here purchase either of these vehicles?

No matter how mhystical a Lancer Evo III might be there is absolutely no interest on my side to get one of those for $11000. I'd take a 96-2000 3000GT VR4 or a 97-99 GSX any time before I get a Lancer Evo III turbo.

You can get a similar competitor European vehicle of the same year for about one fifth of that price:

Ford Sierra Cosworth(AWD turbo)
Ford Escort RS Cosworth (AWD turbo)
Alfa Romeo 156 Quadriflogio Verdi AWD turbo with selespeed
Lancia Delta Integrale (awd TURBO)
Subaru Impreza RS turbo(2 door AWD turbo) pink Subaru emblem
Audi RS2 (5 cylinder , 2.3 turbo AWD)

There are many many mean import cars in the Euopean market that will embaress the Evo III in all the aspect, I just don't see spending a ridiculous aount for a car that was cheap as hell when it was new. The Evo III has no chance agaisnt the fierce Japonese or Euopean market on its class(performance/price).

my .2c

For under 20K you can have a non-legalized (but registered) R32 Skyline GT-R here in the USA. Why a Evo 3?

Ha ha, right. I'd rather have a Lancia, Cossie or Alfa instead of a car that I can actually find parts for in the U.S, when something goes wrong. I agreed with you in picking a VR-4 or 2G GSX instead, but wether or not those other cars you mention could embarass an Evo III is a matter of debate, but the Evo wins hands down when it comes to ease of repair and upgrade.

so no real updates huh?

Anywhoo I'm not sure how some of the cars you listed including the lancia and cosworths would be anywhere near 1/5th the price of the evo.. (ignoring the fact that those two are other cars that where never officialy imported here outside of I believe 20 cossies). I'd also be suprised if some of the other cars you listed would outperform the evo and in the case of the turbo RS I'm not sure how durrable the engine and more importantly the tranny would be to such an increase in power. Add in all the suspension and upgrades and I cant figure out how it could still be cheaper then then what he is apperently selling those evo's for..
Anyway I'm just curious. When it comes to bang for your buck I would be much more compelled to getting a used(but well taken care of) EVO VIII RS. but I'll admit assuming everything on this was legit, and the cars werent ragged out(two BIG if's..) then this option sure would be worth at least a test drive
