One glaring dissappointment in the Evo
Seeing as I don't have one I'm not sure how valid this is going to be, but it could also be somethings like us DSM guys deal with. On the stock shifter assembly they used rubber bushings, which when shifting at high speeds, the plates would actually move, causing the likelihood of mis-shifts to increase. The solution came from the "symborski shift kit." It just replaces the rubber bushings with metal ones and also a sleave in the shifter with a bit smaller diameter sleave which worked wonders. Someone should probably take apart the console and look into this, might make a quick and easy fix.
I can't belive no one has mentioned this to the main poster for this thread yet, BUT, if you are shifting so fast that you are beating the syncro's, then you should be teaching yourself to double clutch. Do a search on double clutching and Heel Toe, if you claim to drive your car like it was ment to be driven, Hook it up right!
Edit made due to the fact I just got back from the bar. Nuff Said.

Dude, I was just about to reply to you too
You're obviously not
enough if you made the edit.
does anyone know if the tranny can handle 500ish h.p.? i'm told the WRX tranny is pretty weak and will have problems. i haven't heard anything about the Evo tranny. any help?
i'm looking to buy one, but don't want to be limited...

The Evo tranny is MUCH stronger than the WRX tranny. I haven't seen specific test on it, but Claudius tells me from his experience that the tranny can handle quite a bit of torque (350+ftlbs) before things start breaking.
A test I've heard the Japanese testers did on the STi was pretty amazing. They took a stock WRX and a stock STi 6spd and failure tested the tranny. The WRX died in 5 attempts, the STi in nearly 200 attempts. This test I'm sure was all about wrecking the tranny, so this should give you good idea of how strong the Evo and STi 6spd is. The WRX tranny is garbage.

Evilution, you sound like a guy that will destroy your tranny in no time. I just toasted a lightning last night and it was the very first time I got on it.. Didn't have any problems at all, but I am used to driving a "DSM" which have the notorious problem of tranny destruction... If you learn to drive the car the way it was built to drive, not the way you want it to drive, it'll do good things for you... It still shifts better than my WRX and GSX...
I don't know if you've ever owned an AWD car before, but there is MUCH more load on the tranny than any other type of drivetrain.. Be nice to it and it'll last... Just my .02

I agree with all the DSMers in there. We're used to the notchy, tricky gearboxes so I dont think I'll have a problem whtn I get mine. Evilution, you should talk to road race about their polyurethane kit to stiffen up the mounts on the shifter. That may help you guide the shifter more accurately. You also might be shifting too fast, or letting go of the clutch a hair too early when landing the gear. I know I do this sometimes with my eclipse when I try too shift too fast.
Same thing happened when I got my 2G Eclipse GSX. Two things took place over the next month or so, I learned to really drive a manual tranny and the tranny broke in a bit / got easier to shift.
I was checking out some evo's at a local dealership a few days ago aka dry shifting the **** out of it and it felt like it may need a little breaking in, but all in all WOW. Only cars I've ever driven with a better feel (but also a longer throw) have been BMW's
heh... have to jump in here to defend the Lightning, after Jonasan50's comment... stock ones with rookie drivers tend to run low 14's, especially if they are '99-'00 models. Power boost in '01 from 360 to 380, so stock with good driver normally runs 13.6 or so. Add a pulley and a chip, such as mine, and you have an easy 12.8 at 106mph... quite rude to your average C5 vette owner... much fun with a 4650 pound full size truck. Many low 12 and even 11 second L's out hunting victims, so watch yourself.
Best mod your Evo if you plan to tangle with a modded L and a decent driver... they are torque monsters with 1.8 60's easily achievable on stock tires, so AWD launches will need work to keep up.
Of course I am trading mine for an Evo, so you can see my preferences on this whole thing...

Well guys this isn't a civic .Even my friend with a eclipse gst said this cause he once had a very fast civic and you can just bang in the gears all day long.
after feeling the shifter and how tight it was on the evo i would only imagine that shifting should be done swift and preciese.
