One glaring dissappointment in the Evo
the synchros are made to slow down the dog teeth on the gear by "biting" into the oil. if the it is shifting hard then you may need to double cluth.. or try pushing the clutch pedal all the way in. i used to miss shift in my Z because i would try to shift to quick. but the gear has to slow down. if you want a fast shift try skipping the clutch pedal all together. but say by to your tranny. basicly slow down on you shifting. some tranny's are actually designed not to let you shift if the speed of the vehicle is to high for that gear. just useless knowledge
I just broke mine in and I have grinded second 2 times and missed 2 times. I am not retarded and I know how to drive just fine, but somthing kinda catches and then you miss or grind. No big deal I just need to get used to it I guess
Exactly Sano. It snags like I've been saying. Basically when shifting into 2nd it hits a snag in the neutral gate before going into 2nd. Since I'm shifting fast I'm expecting to release the clutch at the same time it's "supposed" to go in gear. But the snag keeps it from going in gear at the time I release the clutch so I grind it. Happened twice on the track today and ruined my best 60' times and what would've been my best times of the day.
My friend has a lightning and with plenty of mods off the bottle was running mid 13's @ 103-104. Most of the Lightnings there today were in the 13-14 sec range with 2+ 60'. Granted I'm sure they're not the best drivers but with 400+lbs of torque I find it hard to see anyone getting enough traction with street tires on to pull a 1.8. Of course you do have a lot of weight on your side so maybe. Those are bad *** trucks though. Still take the Evo anyday as it can keep up in a straight line and it wouldn't even be funny in the twisties.

Didn't have any problems at all, but I am used to driving a "DSM" which have the notorious problem of tranny destruction... If you learn to drive the car the way it was built to drive, not the way you want it to drive, it'll do good things for you... It still shifts better than my WRX and GSX...
I don't know if you've ever owned an AWD car before, but there is MUCH more load on the tranny than any other type of drivetrain.. Be nice to it and it'll last... Just my .02

BTW, I never miss a gear on the freeway or road but I don't drive it like I hate during those times either. Many people have had the shift to 2nd problem so I know it's somewhat of a problem. I just hope there's a fix for it soon.
I know from first hand knowledge that one, AWD cars are tougher
to launch in my opinion, and the WRX tranny is weak and a pain.
I did install a short shifter and it made it much better. I'll get my evo in about 3 weeks and just hope it does shift better than the WRX does. Regardless of what people say I think the WRX has the weakest clutch I have truly ever driven, but it's a great car other than that.

press the clutch all the way and do not release it until the next gear is engaged. let the synchro work what its supposed to do.

BTW on my last run I held the clutch down the whole time but it wouldn't go into 2nd. I'm guessing my revs were too high and it's has an issue when under that heavy a load in that low of a gear.

never was able to fix it.

Change your trans oil.
Whilst it's not a DSM trans, it's by the same people, so a good place to start would probably be the fluids 2G DSM boxes enjoy.
The 1st trans in my 98 loved GM Synchromesh, hated the various Redline combinations. 2nd trans doesn't like GMS but works very well on BG Synchroshift (II ?)
My 95 shifts best with 2 quarts BG and a top off of GMS - hates Redline, notchy with pure GMS.
Synchro gears will never shift really fast because of the design.
It takes a dog box to shift really fast.
1st to 2nd slowness is usually synchro-related as there is a much larger speed differential than with the other gears, so it takes longer for the synchros to match the speeds.

maybe the clutch was adjusted so that only very little slip is allowed and you really have to press the clutch all the way down,or else the clutch is not yet disengaged which means it is still turning the gears which no amount of synchro can correct. you can adjust the clutch if you want to disengage early but it will risk premature wear on this part.
forgive my ignorance.. i'm new...:
what is DSM??
i've been reading up on everything evo/wrx related for the past few years and have yet to hear that term. thanks.
also, i'm looking to get an evo four weeks from now... and with what everyone here is saying that sequential tranny sure sounds nice
and in response to another thread... i found a place a couple hours from here that is selling them at M.S.R.P. shhhhh! hehe. i'm getting the base model plus carbon fiber wing for $30k even. from what i've read here that's a good deal??
