jedinite, thanx for the great tips in a nicely detailed review of the the first 1500. I am going to try out that waxing the wheel trick i first learned hereThe future definitely looks promising from the impression you gave us about the folks you met at AUTOMOTORSPORTS and I can't wait to hear and see how your modding turns out with them. Not to end on a bad note, but I hope someone here will eventually find a fix for what is causing the passenger side rattle that seems to be plaguing the '03 EVOs. Though, I am sure it is hardly noticeable when cruising in your exhilirating new dream ride, jamming to your fav' tunes ok I'll go back to surfing the site and patiently waiting out MY EVO now

That was a great write up....up until the part about the Nitrous. The 4G63 motor can handle way more than 350 HP w/o nitrous. And if you want that extra 50-75 hp kick, why not just get a EBC and set the low bost for everyday driving, and high boost or scrabmle boost for that instant jump in power when needed. Don't have to be all rice and add NOS like all the kiddies driving Honduhs do. Greddy even offers a remot switch if you feel the need to reenact moments from the movie, only it'll switch you to the high boost mode of their EBC.

Its not about rice. or re-enacting some two-bit movie.

From what we've seen from most of the tuners so far, 350HP is where this is going to go without spending a lot of money. I'm just looking to get reliable HP out of the car, in the neighborhood of 350 HP. Shouldn't be a problem at all.

The NEX comment is halfway joking, but it is a decent way to add cheap HP. Hard to argue with 50 or 75 HP for the price - you're going to have to spend a lot more to get the same out of other mods, once you're already sitting at 350HP or so...

EvolOne

Hey, Hi-Ho Silver, EvolOne is I. 7500 miles on my Evol in 3 months.

I know what you mean about the driving. Never been a street racer, but now, oh boy, can't wait to race people on the streets. Not big time, just play.

My wife takes bonine for car sickness and then goes for rides. We traveled up highway 1 from San Luis to Monterey, then through the sierras. Next best thing to a motorcycle, a sport bike.

I am looking for reliable tuning too. More HP. Reliable, durable, harm free power.

Thanks for citing the tuners.

Whenever I question the power of this beast, I realize I'm living at 1/2 throttle. Things get quickly exciting when full throttle is sought.

And yes, 5th gear cruising at 70-75, a light touch to the throttle and 90 or 100 comes up very quickly.

Love this beast. And it is Evol. It is EvolOne. RW

Evol or STi

For those interested...I owned a WRX wagon and was certain positive I'd be getting an STI.

I test drove the Sti, and was unimpressed. I'm not wide enough to fit the seats. They seem barco wide. The shifter was mushy. Hard to tell what gear I was in. And the console booster armrest was floppy and cheap.

I wandered off after driving, thinking, huh, I must be off or something. And on the way home stopped by a nasty Mitsu dealer. Thought. Welll, heck, why not give it a drive.

The old persuade them you're really a customer process, and eventually I was behind the wheel.

Pull away, shift, shift again, hit corner, snake that corner, snake side to side in the road. And the first words: You'ld have to be crazy to buy an Sti, compared to this.

And ever since, I've felt the same way. The Evol is a weapon. The sti is tamer, toned down, more power, but everything else is just not as sharp. Not a weapon.

I agree about the handling. The Evo8 is a rolling DUI tester. If you're not sober, you'll not drive straight. So responsive to steering inputs. Some dude lost a sofa in front of me. No problem. Wrist snick right, snap back left, and you've dodged it. The trailing SUV wasn't quite so nimble.

On back roads, it's fun to run with someone who lives the twisty. They'll feel you breathing on their bumper -- not tailgaiting, mind you -- and they'll speed up. You let them pull away, like they're dusting you. And then without mercy, reel them back in. And they drive a bit harder. The game is fun. Nothing risky. Just fun.

Great to hear you are still enjoying your evo. It's these little insights into life with an Evo that make me want one more every day.

after reading your write up i figured id write one, too.i have just about 1100 miles on mine-bought it 1.5 months ago.after coming out of a maxima with a 3.5 litre and into the evos 2.0 litre id have to say its 2 different animals.this engine to me is quick from 3000 up to 5000 rpms.what i have found is after 5000 it takes awhile to build to redline.0-60 comes fast as 100 m.ph.,too.driving around town theres plenty of zip and steering response is excellent.never tested the limits as far as top speed or braked hard so cant vouch for that.also,no clutch drops, burnouts or anything also, overall id have to say its definately a fun car and hope to stay with it(unless the mr comes here..which i think will in 2005).

above 5000 rpm

Good to hear other positive thoughts.

I think one great think about the EVo is that it is sooooo easy to make the engine snap and bark a little more, more smoothly making large powergains. Such as AM catback, usually gives a slight shift in torque and hp to the higher rpms, makes it spin up faster, and yields another 15-30 ft/lbs, depending on system and who you ask.

There are other mods, very simple ones, that open up the HP. A piggy-back ECU, a reflash, the simplest, or a complete ECU replacement.

Now, I know of a lot of people who even send the turbo off for an impeller/compressor blades replacement. Lots are talking 325 minimum, awhp.

So, whereas the maxima or other NA engines are rather limited as far as power gains available without MAJOR changes, the EVO is strong at purchase, and is just sitting there waiting for you to extract the many hidden ponies available....

Cat/Turboback exhausts are often the earliest things to do. The ECU mods, with a sharp knowledgable person, yield great ponies, and then intakes, cams, .... the world is your puppy...

R2...

But again, I have never driven anything with such backroad potential, and ***-saving capabilities. I sense my evo transitioning from understeer to oversteer, and just using the accellerator and steering wheel, power out of oversteer. It makes me feel so much more competent and able, than, ahem, I happen to be.

I brought my car 26sep03. I brought it with about 4000miles on the clock. I could not afford a new one. It still had the new car smell. The person I brought it from was an older guy. Well kept clean you could not tell it was used. I drove the car from Soiux Falls South Dekota all the way to Queens New York. Smiles all the way, I was maintaining 120mph most of the way no joke. I caught a speeding tkt in Indiana. I brought an Apec afcII and a Hks evcII. I did not want to install them because of the waranty. About a month ago I decided to Modify. I have an Apex afcII with Buschur settings. Hks downpipe, Hks hi power cat back, Hks evcII set at 19psi, k&n drop filter and a grounding kit. I LOVE THIS CAR. I kill 350z all day long. I murder g35coupes. I have about 10835miles on the car and loving every bit of it. I already changed the brake pads. Changed oil and filter twice already. I love this car.
