Question Driving Habits?

Just was curious about some of the other memeber's driving habits.

Do you guys downshift and brake together to stop?
Or do you use only the brakes?

I put in neutral then brake....Once I reach the speed I want then I downshift...There is numerous threads on this topic already, if you read you will notice that it is better to break than engine break,,,,,

I usualy take mine out of gear and use straight brakes. I just don't want to down shift and get my RPM way up there you know? Unless i'm racing, then i'll do it.

isn't it better to downshift, you know let the engine slow the car down. that's usually what i do. plus it's illegal in some states to brake without the car being in gear. safety issues.

I downshift and use brakes, but I agree with evo rc, brake not engine brake

I usually engine brake/downshift and then brake. When I'm almost at a complete stop I just slide the trans into neutral without pushing in the clutch. It's easy to feel when the transmission is unloaded where it will allow you to do this; you will know w/o even touching the shifter and if you do it right you are not stressing the shift forks or doing anything bad.

I hope you are not serious - that sounds like instructions on how to wreck your car

I guess it's just habbit, but I match rev at every single stop. I really doubt it will hurt anything because the EVO is a race car, and it's built to rev. 55,000 miles and stronger than ever.

it all depends on the sitaution . Controlled driving you can down shift to lower driving speed while breaking . If its a sudden stop of course well just plop it into nuetral and let the breaks do the work.. less strain on the drive train will always be best imo(breaking in neutral) but will wear more on the breaks

what do you mean? I'm basically saying I brake then downshift. However when you race it's a differenct scenario.

I just leave it in the gear while I'm braking, and when I'm about to stop, I put it in neutral.
Example: Cruising at 35mph in 3rd gear and need to stop
Leave in 3rd gear and brake
When I'm about to fully stop, pop it in neutral

I downshift while braking, rev-matching in each gear. It's more fun that way!

I learned to drive in England - over there you will fail for not downshifting while you brake. Old habits die hard, plus it's very hard on the brakes alone on many roads in Colorado (steep declines).

I've heard stories of cops with laser temperature guns stopping people and checking rotor temps. It never ceases to amaze me how many idiots will coast tens of miles down mountain roads on their brakes.
