P0301 actually is related to the P0300. P0300 is for random/multiple cylinder misfire. P0301 is the code for misfire on cylinder number one (similar for P0302, P0303, and P0304 on the other cylinders). According to the service manual, the spark plug and wire are the first things to check when you get this code. They probably just assumed that was the problem and sent you on your way without doing the other checks from the manual (cyl. compression test, injector inspection...).
Sorry to hear about the troubles--hopefully it's nothing too serious. Good thing you can get it repaired under warranty. Good luck.
From what I understand is that the 4g63 MUST have cam tolerances within .001 of an inch. The inconsistencies of manufacturing would cause a possible larger runout, causing an exhaust or intake valve not to seat properly. In case of either, poor compression but an exhaust valve would burn out rather quickly under these circumstances. I dont know, though....I figured Id throw in an idea but I have no idea why such a nice new motor would burn up.
Just the same, get a good damned loner and beat the crap out of it. 3k miles on a 36k dollar car brand new......BS!

EVERY auto manufacturer has cars that go bad when new. They're machines with thousands of parts. Just be glad it's not a $120K AMG Mercedes or a $55K M3. They've had plenty of issues as well. Heck, even Toyota Camry's have issues. It happens. It does suck when it happens to you though.
If you know anything about Royal Purple, you'll know it's at worst, equal to Mobil 1. If it came down to running either/or in my high $$ engine, I'd run Royal Purple over Mobil 1 without hesitation. Wait, I do run it in my engine!

As far as using Royal Purple, some people have already explained why, but it was to rid the engine of any metal shavings that broke off during break in. The dealer did the oil change for me and actually told me royal purple was the best oil i could put in it (which i already knew) so they are not giving me any flack about that. I'm positive i put premium gas in it before i got the code, and the first thing i did when i saw the service engine light was check the gas cap. There was no real change in performance after the light came on also, but me being the cautious person i am, i didnt really push it that hard for fear of damaging anything else. On a lighter note, Pontiac Grand Prix's dont drift very well and cant beat a stock Integra GSR
After 1000 miles I repalced my oil in the IX. Took a magnet to the oil...nothing stuck to it.
If metal shavings occured during break in the scaring on cylinder walls etc. would be insane and we would all have serious oil appetitie issues to boot. Engine parts dont go from machine shop or casting furnace direct into the assembly plant, they will be washed numerous times along the way.
At least thats my experience with the 9 cars I have owned and maintained.
