Should I Buy a IX???

Hey guys i am new to the forums and i been thinking of buyin a car for a while now. I wanted a FD RX-7 but i want a car that will last me without problems cus i start college this year, im 18 btw. Im gona keep it perfectly stock cept rims and exhaust cus u cant go fast in the city anyways and that car is crazy fast @ stock. I want a Evo IX not the MR cus i dont really know if its worth getting MR for $5k more. What do u guys think is it a good choice for me at this age to get a IX and i also wanted to know how much it would cost per month. Will it be high maintenance? It is a beautiful car and it is my first choice. Thanx for any input.

get an accord or civic, you're too young to be able to afford and handle a car like this. ..

sounds like you need more time behind the wheel. If you buy this car, and can afford it while in school, than more power to you. I just know it will get trashed, crashed , neglected, and everything else negative that could happen to a car.
College.....you'll probably get wasted one night, and you'll friends persuade you to take the car out and rip it up. And you'll kill people and or yourself with your stupidity. You'll be in school....SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!! Buy a schitbox

Dont take this the wrong way. Being only 18, I would probably stay away from a evo. The reason I say this is because the payments alone will be around $500 per month depending how much you put down. You really need to put into perspactive on how much this is car is going to cost to maintain.
Do you have a secure job? Are your parents going to pay for most of it?

The reason why I am saying this is because I've had a car when I was 18 and the payments were just too much and I lived pay check to pay check and I was starting to dislike my car. I sold it for a cheaper car.

Evo is a great tunners car and I respect that you are at least asking others for opinions but what it comes down to is your ability to maintain the car and payments.
Once again, dont take it in a offensive way. I am just trying to give you advice.
If you can offord it, go for it by all means.
Good luck.

Afford yeah. My parents are helping me with mine. Handle....that's your assumption. The stats may say we are more likely to crash but then there are time when stats are wrong. Just thot i'd chime in.

to orginal poster. I'd get a different car. Even if YOU aren't gonna drink (fat chance but it's possible. I haven't and it's my second quarter already) others will. I don't trust the jackasses at my college so my Evo's staying at home and is my weekender. Get a used car for now. Get the X if you still like Evos by your Jr. year. Cus there's the possibility that you can get a house for rent and you'll have a closed garage. TRUST ME a campus isn't the place for an Evo.

The resident STI here parks in corner spots in the most remote parts of campus while at school. He lives off campus. Smart guy.

If your 18.. you dont have a chance of being able to manage a budget and own this car.. its hard enough for top college graduates to do so without having to dip into the parents pocket books. Mantience will be 10x more then your currently used to.
Even if your parents are going to pay for the whole thing..are you going to be able to afford autox tires, track times, expensive service? If your not tracking your evo at least some of the time then why even bother buying a car like this as you will never be able to experience more then 75% of the performance on the street without killing yourself.

Its good that im getting good replys cus i really need to think bout it. If im gona get it im gona get it bout like 4 months from now. And my parents will do down payment so thats covered. Only thing i have to worry is bout monthly payments and as far as it goes by takin care of it , im a freak of nature when it comes to stuff i own. I take care of everything like its worth a million dollars. I will treat it the best way its supposed to be treated. My friend bought a VIII when he was 16 and he dusnt seem to suffer with money problems. I want a car that is the best of its kind and the only thing is that i am willing to work for it because it is worth it. Its awesum cus im gettin ideas of how it is to keep this car. Thank you and keep posting with ur ideas.

that's certainly not a helpful response. He asked for our advice, and it is being given by those with a lot more experience and maturity than he has. Also, none of us can stop him from doing anything, so there's no way for us to "let" him do anything.

afgcfan, it would be unwise for you to get a monster car like this at the age of 18 when entering college. It will be over 30k, which will be around $600/mo for payments plus another $200-300/mo in insurance, plus expensive maintenance down the line after only a year or so ($1000 for tires, $1500 for clutch, $300-400 for brake pads, $70 oil changes every 3 months, $30/week for gas, etc etc). If it's all being paid for by your parents, then I have a very good suggestion:

1) Tell your parents you want an Evo IX that costs $35k. Then, tell them that you don't think it would be wise for a college freshman to have this as a first car, then ask for a used Honda Civic that costs $10k and have them put the other $25k in a money market account.

2) Enjoy your cheap, high gas mileage, worry-free Civic for 4 years, then when you graduate and have to go off to find your own income with your own job and own place to live, take that $25k+interest and get yourself an Evo XI...

It was just a guess. Basically, he'd be in great shape to get whatever Evo is available at that time (or to buy furniture or a down payment on a house or a down payment on a more expensive car or blah blah blah anything).

Thumbs up Get the car?

Well, if you have the cash to take care of it, then I say get one! But if you are going to put many miles on it, add up what it will cost you in gas, tires, brakes, maint, mods, etc.

For example I do my own oil changes which cost about say $30 every 3,700 miles.

My car has 44K miles and I have gone threw 2 sets of tires and a complete front and rear brake job which I did myself. Not cheap but easy enough to do.

Then there is the 15 and 30K service. Now I am ready for the 45K service.

Oh, and a clutch to top that off which was about a grand.

I have only had the car for 2 years, but that did not stop be from getting a spare motor, trand and diff.

Insurance is also another factor.

Am I nuts for doing all this?

Or do I just love the car?
