my friend that works at Mitsu said there's a TSB for the IX regarding a transmission grind. TSB said to replace ring, sleeve and or synchro depending on the type of grind. I get it once in a while and mine in bone stock, noticed it from the first day I drove it off the lot.

Is the TSB just for the IX 5-speed? Or does it apply to the six speed also?

tsb, they should know about it without even driving it.

anyway, syncros are the only thing that causes grinding, unless you got some funky shifter.

I just called an east coast dealership and there is no TSB out for the IX apparently, but who knows. I'm going to get in touch with some west coast dealers to find out if there are any TSBs on the IX.

ha and i thought i was the only one who had that 5th gear shifting problem. luckily they fixed my tranny even though they couldnt duplicate it either they just took my word for it. My car isnt even stock either i have tbe with cat delete, boost controller, intake , afc and fmic and piping. They dont even care about my warranty obviously cause i have never put it back to stock

The synchros may be the source of the noise but they are not necessarily the cause. There are a number of factors that can cause grinding including the oil (temp, viscosity, level..etc), the mating parts (gear cone, hub, sleeve, shift fork, etc how they align and interface), and most importantly the clutch operation (driver operation and mechanical adjustment.) Any of these factors can easily cause premature wear through the designed synchronizer wear gap causing the grinding condition.

I would highly advise everyone check their tranny fluid LEVEL before taking it to a dealer for grinding. Try to check it in as level location as possible and top it off. The sump on the cars is not huge and running a little low is a little less oil to get into the synchro interface. On my old 2G Eclipse GSX, this normally fixed any light grinds or bumps in shifting. Also, use a quality oil, everyone has a personal favorite, just don't buy the cheapest one.

Also check you SEAT adjustment. Sometimes you think you are depressing the clutch all the way but you really aren't. Click up a notch to where you feel a little cramped and see if the grind goes away. Concentrate on hitting the clutch stop. Sounds odd but I've seen things from this to a floormat between the clutch and clutch stop ( ) cause "bad synchros"

Just my engineering $0.02

But then again, sometimes its just a bad design/bad parts....

i had the same problem. i took it to the dealership the first time and they changed synchro and gear. the 2nd time i had the problem they try to say it was my driving. went to a different dealership and he was honest, and rode with me. he figured out that the clutch causes the wear on the sychro at high rpm's. they could not fix it because the clutch it not under warranty. BS if you ask me. were working on resolving the problem right now.
