Grinding in 2nd gear!

Yep my EVO 9 MR is having 2nd gear grinding already, it does not happen all the time but I can feel and hear it. I can't believe this happening, my EVO is stock and only has 500+ miles. This puts a big damper on moding my EVO Anyway, need some input from you guys...should I take to the dealer now or wait till it gets worst?

Mine does it sometimes too, but then I shift kind of fast..I started to slow down the shifting in order for the synchro to catch up..It just takes time to get use to the tranny. This is my first EVO/Mitsubishi.

It usually happens when I up shift from1st to 2nd gear. Its not like I speed shift, just normal gear changes. This is also my first EVO but I have been driving manual for over 20 years.

Mine doesn't grind, but when shifting, at wot, its rather tricky to go from 1st to 2nd. A lot of the time it will not go into gear.

you do realize these trannies are a little notchy. . .the dealer will tell you to break it in first, I dunno, once your gear box has been warmed up, and enough synchromesh has been cicrulated (like after 5 minutes of driving) does it do this? Or is it only at warm up? I drove a friends 05 MR and it didn't have ANY issues with the box, so tell us when it does this. . .

if I don't drive my evo for a week, this thing happens to me as well. The more I drive the smoother the 2nd gear is. Its always from 1st to 2nd.

Well, I just drove the EVO for lunch and it seems to be smoother and no grinding so far. The grinding usually happens when the engine or tranny is cold, I guess I'll just wait and see if it gets worst.

The notchy feeling is from the cold. I still get that on my car and it's got a little over 2,200 miles on it. From what I understand it's normal, so no worries. I haven't heard any issues of grinding on the MR trannies. The only time I've grinded was shifting incorrectly. However, when I'm at a stop and I get into 1st, there have been times when I can't get into 1st gear at all. Anyone else have this problem?

2nd gear may grind sometimes if the tranny is cold and shifting is done tentatively.

Also 1st gear sometimes does not engage. Try releasing the clutch and depressing again and then try.

These are just my experiences.

Yeah, I do that with 1st when that happens, but I have to move it to neutral. Do you know what causes that?

I think your car is normal. The shifter is very balky when it is cold. Even if you have been driving manual for years, an AWD Mitsu is different from all of them.

I think it's normal too. I was pissed off when I first got my car because I was grinding in second and third gears. But I later realized that I was just trying too hard to slam the stick into gear. If you take your time and let the gears slide into place... they wont grind anymore. It's a Zen thing... you have to BE the gears!

I thought I knew how to drive... but when I got my EVO... I realized I still had a lot to learn.
