'SRS' Lights are on...

This forum really helped me out in getting my evo in shape... I learned alot from you guys.. props!.

Well, I have a problem... I got the car a few weeks ago... yes its a used car... I noticed there was a SRS Light on. Went back to the dealership and they told me some BS that some SRS Seatbelt sensor went out, and its going to cost me at least $400 to fix it.

I need to know how to do this fixup yourself if there are any topics to this issue..greatly appreciated if you can get this resolved for me. and save me $$$.

whats the difference? if you get that checked from autozone dont they just check the engine check codes?? not srs codes...? because from what i know the airbag have its own computer running its own thing.

srs is airbag, mostlikely your seat belt buckle needs replaced, or the light needs to be reset. if you were located in maryland i could've one of my vendors take care of it for nothing. airbag services is the company name.

SRS stands for Supplementary Restraint System. I had that after installing my boost controller you can't reset this light with a diagnostic tool, i tried that. it doesn't pull up the code. so I had someone at the dealer reset it for me.

What makes you think that the dealership is giving you bs? Did you know that as long as that light is on that none of the airbags will work? Did you also know that the firing pin on the seat belts will not lock the seat belt in the event of an accident?

Just because they told you it was going to cost you $$$ does not make it BS.
$400 is a lot of money for me too. But, knowing what you now know, do you really think that is money well spent. It like saying that a $50 motorcycle helmet protects as well as a $400 helmet. Seriously it's not a place where you want to be cheap or to cut corners.

For the record, ANY time the SRS light is on, that system is inoperative. None of the SRS components can be repaired. They have to be replaced. There are no service parts for them and ANYBODY that attempts to do so can be held liable for
the consequences.

whoa dude.... when i bought the car out of the lot the srs light came on and i went back to them and told them about it... they told me that they wont fix it for me unless i pay them $400 to get it replaced. thats when i thought it was bs because i just bought this car... then drove off not even a mile i have this problem in the car... and knowing that the dealer wont fix it for free since i just bought it and it was less than 30 days, thats when i say its BS.

And yes I do need this fixed because i would feel alot better if this car have working safety features...

It is true the SRS light cannot be reset by a standard code scanner. It needs a special computer to do so. My SRS light came on after my mechanic removed the yellow airbag plug without first disconnecting the battery. Nothing short of a special computer would reset it. Luckily his brother works in a nissan dealership and was able to reset the light. My suggestion is to see if any friends work in a dealership and reset the light if you problem was as simple as mine, otherwise part of the safety system may actually need to be replaced.

So you are saying that bs is because the dealership that you bought the car from is not going to help you with the repairs. Right? I'm sorry, I didn't realize that it was the dealership you bought the car from or that it happened as soon as you drove it off the lot. You didn't say that in the original post.

I would agree that they should help you with it.
Is the light still on? How many miles is on your car now? Maybe you should talk to the sales manager or the general manager.

As others have said, even if you replace the part yourself, which I wouldn't recommend that unless you know how to safely disable the SRS prior to the repair, you still will need to have code cleared once that is done.

it was a used car had like 46200 miles on it ... runs like a champ. i love the car but its just the srs light thats bringing up the problem.

i bought the car at a pretty decent price... but still i think the car should of been fixed up before they put it out on the sales floor.

The price that anyone pays for a car is completely irrelevant to warranty coverage.

Try this. The warranty on seat belts, airbags and SRS control units is 5 years or 60k miles. Why isn't it under warranty? Ask them that. If they say anything except it's damaged from an outside influence, then it is covered under warranty. If they say that it was from outside influence, accident damage, flood damage etc then you go to the sales department manager and voice your concerns. If it is from an accident that was not disclosed to you or it's from the previous customer or whatever, you appeal to the fact that you purchased the car and before you had added 1 mile to the odo the light came on. You are now driving a car that is UNSAFE to drive the way that it stands. A car is meant to be driven.

Basically what I'm telling you is to force them to give you the EXACT cause of failure. That will determine the coverage or not. If it isn't covered your next action is to go as far up as needed to get this taken care of.

Call MMNA customer service if they tell you that it's failed but not from outside influence.

Keep us informed.....

i think the dealership is trying to rip you a new one. how could they charge you 400 to fix it, did they diag it, what was the code?. sometimes the light need reset, airbag services the vendor i used for all airbag problems at carmax has been able to reset the light.now if it comes back on then you have to diag somemore. 400 seems like they are trying to make easy money off you. to reset a light it cost $108 for most cars, euros are $140. so i would call an airbag specialist first.if it is blinking in might need a control unit and they can get up to 400 including labor. trust me get out your yellow pages and call around. iam sure there is someone close to you.

It has already been diagnosed. Sounds like to me that they told him it would be $400 to fix the problem causing the light to come on.

Do you think it's possible that there might be some parts that need to be replaced? Is it possible that those parts might actually cost some $$ too? Think about what you are saying and what he said. It looks like to me that is parts AND labor.

As I posted before you cannot service seat belts. They are a replacement only.

I'd just find a place to get the code scanned, find out which sensor it is and then just replace it and wipe the code.
