I apologize in advance for broaching the subject but the ignorance of some of us warrants the question...

Would somebody in a few short sentences explain to me why there is such a high rate of EVO accidents, especially single car accidents?

I don't see nor hear of the amount of accidents in the Audi/VW world and there are plenty more of them than us...

Wow, that R32 is freakin heinous. I really liked the previous version here in the US, but that one Az3ar posted is enough to make my eyes bleed. Don't worry, though, I'm not under any delusions that the Evo is a "pretty" car either. I just think the 04 R32 is far more attractive...

Are you of a different opinion? I'd be very surprised if many people on here like how that looks.

VeeDubya took a chance for sure. At first glance, I had two thoughts - kinda sexy BUT looks like a ford focus and an old civic Si had offspring!

By the way, the Euro versions employ two tone, unlike the color-matched panels on the US models - Audi has always been this way - Similar to many USDM vs JDM lights I suppose.

its not the best looking car of course but its not ugly for sure. I agree 04 R32 looks better than 06 R32.

I loved my R32. A few mods and some track wheels/tires and it smoked many an Evo at the track (not the short track that lasts 12-13 seconds, it takes me at least 20 minutes to get excited!). I couldn't quite keep up with a heavily modded Evo VIII last October, but was only 1-2 seconds slower that day.
I wanted the 4 doors (6'2" with 2 growing kids) and was developing a growing passion to build a more capable track car-so I bought an Evo VIII.
However, if I wasn't tracking my car, and didn't have kids, I would still prefer the VW. The very comfortable interior, capable but comfortable ("euro-suspension,H&R/Bilstein) ride, and abundant and immediate torque, make for a great "street" ride.
Alas, most importantly, I just want to beat everything I encounter on the track-enter EVO. It's great to have so many great cars to choose from in this price range-wish I could have more than one!

The problem, though, is that if you were also driving those same Evos, this wouldn't have been the case. It's important not to leave out that factoid when giving stories like this, because you know that an R32 and Evo with the same mods would not be a very close race. Hell, an R32 with a few mods and tires would have trouble keeping up with a stock Evo with tires...

well being a VW and EVO owner i have to say that the dub is the DD while the Evo only comes out on weekends. i've put waaaayyyy to man stg 3 gti's r32's and vr6 turbos in the rearview in my EVO with not a lot of effort at all.

when it comes down to it you really can't put a VW up performance wise against a Evo... no matter how modded, and if you do beat a Evo.. how much did it cost you ? fo life......

my 02 GTI 1.8T

Actually, I did drive my brother in law's 2003 Evo VIII last October. I was running 1:32 at Grattan speedway in my R32 on Dunlop super race tires and some basic other mods (euro suspension, miltek exhaust, CAI, APR chip, H&R rear bar, Haldex upgrade-more immediate transfer to the rear wheels). The Evo only had the Works P2 and was on max performance summer tires and I ran a 1:33, but probably could have done a 1:32 if I would have pushed it a bit more.
So, in my opinion, you can make an R32 (great street car) into a capable track car. While an Evo comes out of the box a capable track car and can be turned into a track monster. I will certainly be attempting to prove the latter point this season. I can't wait for the snow to melt! I'll be hitting Grattan on May 5th, with my 05 VIII. Works TBE, P2, 255 RA1's, etc. My goal is 1:30 as I will still have the stock suspension. I haven't had my Evo at the track yet, but the 05's LSD really bites and digs in-noticeable improvement over the 03 I drove. Inside front wheelspin was an issue with the R32 as well-more so than the 03 Evo.
Then I'll deal with the suspension and maybe some cams and try to hit 1:28!!

Two different cars, both great, but with different strengths. Hope to see some "fast Evos" at Grattan and Gingerman here in Michigan this year!

Ya know Jeff, I read a few comments from your post on OhioVW...typical responses, you see them everywhere. Here there's the same...EVOs rule, everything else doesn't.

A lot of people bash the Evo and Mitsu. I can't blame them for bashing Mitsu, but the Evo is in its own class. They speak of reliability, and how Evos that are modded last half as long. Typical ignorance. One really needs to look at actual figures. VW has had one of the worst reliability ratings for a manufacturer.

My wife and I felt this first hand with our 99 Passat 1.8t. Just after the warranty passed, it turned horrible, and I'm a car-nut/motorhead. I started to check into replacing parts, and was so shocked, we traded it in the following weekend.
This is dishearting, because I'm an ole' school VeeDub guy. I still have my 1956 in the garage (about 20k invested).
Anyway, I've always admired the GTI, even with corporate VW the way it is. Best of luck getting the EVO.

After 3 track events with my Evo, I find myself almost bored at events between runs, I tighten things between runs and it's good to go - I am very impressed with the beating the car accepts.
For many of you to put the Evo above the VW or Audi is disappointing - Both great rides. The fit and finish of the Audis/VWs is impressive - I hope to modify my interior to be closer to that of the TTs in time.
The feel of an Audi/VW at high track speeds is more comfortable than that of an EVO IMHO. The Evo gets me there faster, but it feels lighter, this is something very difficult to put on paper, feelings aren't tangible.

Bottom line - I have an Evo and an Audi S2. The S2 has been "Retired" for about 2 years, the Evo is more fun to drive and never has a problem.

My Dad at a young 61, has an Audi RS4 and my Mom an Infiniti FX45. He is waiting to see if the X has improved fit and finish and he'll be sold. He loves the ride of my MR, he never disagrees that it's faster in both acceleration and lap times.. He's at a point that he wants it all - He wants a car he can take to the track, but will provide him heated and power seats, a luxury feel and a better fit and finish than what my VIII has to offer so he can take other 60+yr old clients in it comfortably.

You pay a lot of money for the "Accomodation," not compromise of an Audi/VW - you should respect it as car lovers.

I hope the X comes out soon, Mr. 61 has his eyes on a Le Mans when it comes out. And alas the beauty of the Evo - Here's a guy looking at 2 cars - 1@ a hefty 130k and one 90k less - If you're going to argue anything, continue to argue that the EVO can compete againt cars double/triple/quadruple the cost and maintain Japanese reliability.

VWAG continues to grow its market - can you say the same for "Bail me out again, please" Mitsubishi Motors. Audi/VW's line runs deep, what does Mitsubishi have?
VWAG will support mods, give you a warranty that Mitsubishi can't touch though they claim "Best backed cars in the world." For 4 years, you pay NOTHING for VWAG servicing and you receive loaners of equal value. (In my case, I junked the Mitsu warranty because I trusted the reliability, this is a non-issue with VWAG).

Respect the cars and the companies for what they have to offer. knows reliable performance!
Well said! I'll agree to that.
