Gas

I know that the Evo is supposed to run 91+ octane but i was wondering if you can get away with running mid-grade or even reg. if you just stayed off the boost?

I doubt it but maybe someone with technical info can chime in. There is someone on here tuned t0 330whp on 87 octane but with water injection.

Yes you can get away with lower octane, but boost is VERY limited. The thing is, the turbo is so easy to spool and create boost, that its just not worth driving with 89 or 87 octane. Just pay the extra cents for each gallon and have fun!

Yes you can get away with it. The ECU will retard the timing. In my country we get below 91 octane. My boost gauge shows 21.5 psi (peak) when I reset the ecu, but after a bit of driving, it doesn't go above 19 psi. I know my car will die soon.

Well, the thread starter asked a question, and I gave an answer. Doesn't matter if he can afford to or not.

As far as being cheap a$$, for me its impossible to get better gas no matter how much I pay.

I think you can get away with it, but like somebody said it's better to stick with what is recommended. I mean it sucks that I only have the option of 91 octane (not 93-94 like the eastcoast, midwest, and south) I wouldn't even consider lower than 91 octane, because 91 is already low enough.

You can boost the octane with toluene if necessary, which you can buy from a lot of places. Not sure if you want to do that long term though. Toluene likes to swell rubber seals.

You CAN put in lower octane gas for emergencies, but for regular driving, use premium. I think it said that in the manual that comes with the car.

It would be extremely foolhardy. The Evos are pretty well defensed against detonation, but intentionally lowering the octane in your car would lead to either the best case scenario of the ECU pulling ridiculous crap to minimize knock or, in a worst case scenario, the equivalent of throwing a hand grenade in your block.
