Because what gets put into law here eventually makes it way to other states. I thought most car enthusiasts knew that.

Yes, to a degree. Dealerships are much better about parts supplied in-house - Ralliart, STi, TRD, NISMO. That's considered part of the deal.

But if you put on a 3" exhaust system and your turbo's blow, that's out of your pocket. And if the engine goes with that on, you better find a way to get your old exhaust on while it's being towed to the shop, or that is your deal too.

Some dealers are better than others, and some manufacturers are more lenient than others. Subaru recently decided to start selling 5 different aftermarket tuner products out of their dealerships - however, they are entirely suspension or cat-back muffler modifications only.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen
Just to add a thought here...

Japanese and European drivers typically don't run up the mileage we Americans do. While 10-15k miles is pretty much run of the mill here, I think a typical Japanese driver might put on 2-5k. The significant mileage difference is one of the hindrences of us getting some of the high-tech goodies. For example, a part that can go 15k miles without failure will last 3+ years in Japan - but might not survive 6 months in the US. It can really drive warranty costs up...

Eventually you too will be burdened with the low octane of CA. The restrictive emissions that we bear today you will inherit tomorrow. Setting your dislike for CA aside, if it can be done as reliable as the 4g63, wouldn't you want another .4 L. Maybe it can even be running a little less boost and making the same power or more straight from the factory. Of course if you're one of the "we shouldn't be parting with our (more like their) WRC hearitage", there is no point in arguing more diplacement with you. Ohterwise ...

There are super tuners that will tear it apart, balance and stroke it. Port and polish the heads, add heavier valve springs and a more aggressive cam profile. Squeeze every last ounce of power from it. Screw octane, they're running 100+ race gas and bring on the NO2. I love reading about their adventures, but I am not one of them. There are the aggressive shade trees, like Al, that will strap every bolt on to it in the quest for power. Their aventures also makes a fun read. I am not in that group either. Then there is the more common players, with their manual/electric boost controller, turbo back exhaust, and possibly even a chip of some sort. I'm in this group. I would like to think that I can get a little more power without waking the detination beast. I'm glad to see that Mitsu seems to be somewhat aggressive with their factory tune. But little head room for playing couldn't hurt, espicially for those of us that are in CA. JMO
