DEFI BF Illum Issue.

I hooked up my DEFI's and these were out of my STi and using the How-To for illum was using the Cig lighter - but that means the gauges were only coming on when the headlights were turned 1 click.

SO I re-hook them up using the Power wire and they are on ok now...but the DIm function dosen't work on the gauges. You can press the up/down arrow and they will dim or Brighten but that dosen't work anymore for some reason.

I hooked the white wire (defi Illum) to the Red wire (ign on) on the Cig assy.

any clue why they won't dim but work like normal even w/ memory?

Perhaps because you're hooked up to a constant 12v source for your illumination? I just installed my BF's this past weekend and I tapped into the radio switched 12V for the illumination and my dimming feature works perfectly. Infact, I tapped everything off the radio harness since none of the darn how-to's showed how it works on an EVO IX and the cig lighter area. The wiring was all different for me down there. Let me know if you need help, I could give you the pinouts if you need.

thats whats weird.
I taped into the Correct wire that the how to told me to but the gauge worked but wouldn't light the face only the Flashing Red light would work untill I turned the Headlight switch once. And even w/ the Headlight/gauges face on..it still woudn't dim.

I tried the 12v because I thought thats what I used for the STi (clock) but the DIm feature still won't work.

I don't understand the whole "Pinout Thing".I guess its just hardwiring to the ECU?Not sure how that works.just know the ol' fashioned way.

I'm installing a new CD player in a week or so.I guess I tap into that Illum wir once I do that.Maybe thats what I need to do to fix it.

make sure its also plugged into the correct spot on the control panel, there are 2 spots,

and here you go: https://www.evolutionm.net/features/...rojectevo/24/3

Defi Wire Stock Wire
Constant Power (Red) »Black w/ Red Stripe on Radio Harness
Ground (Black) » Black Wire from Cigarette Lighter
Ignition On (Orange)> Red Wire from Cigarette Lighter
Illumination (White) »Green w/ White Stripe Wire from Cigarette Lighter

Thats what I used..and they got some wires wrong.
The Brown wire on the Cig assy is the "Red" wire. There is no Red wire there.
When I hooked it to the Green w/ white Stripe (cig assy) w/ Defi White wire (illum wire)...thats how I got the gagues working but wouldn't light up untill I flipped the headlighst up 1.
Reason for that and its gotta be wrong is becasue the Cig lighter is not always lit up...It has the light for when its dark and you obviously have your lights on.

Checked and I do have it hooked up to the meter 1.But when I plugged it in,the Oil pressure did not light up but BOOST.But I know the gauges are weird...you have to restart the car and everything in order for them to read right.

gotta try it again now that I know for Sure that its Meter 2

Wierd sorta similar problem on my Evo.

Defi's worked like a champ for months. Car has been down due to some stuff being added...and the battery was low on voltage. So we hooked up a jumper box to give it some extra voltage. After getting everything squared away, fired up the car, and the gauges only lit when the lights were on. Checked all the wiring, all was proper.

The gauge still worked, and the warning lights worked as well, but no illumination...gauge was black. So I hooked up the illumination wire to the switched power, and now the gauges work fine. Don't dim with the headlight, but who cares.....

Same thing with a customer car. Gauges work fine, but no illumination. Turn the lights on, and they light right up.

I think the battery jumping thing killed something inside the brain.

I don't think they dim w/ the headlights unless you maybe hook it to the Illum of the radio harness...but On my STi I had them hooked up Correctly and they stayed 1 shade untill you dim them yourself w/ the control unit.

Not sure if that was a feature on them but thats why It has the dimming feature.

They dim when you turn on the headlights, at least mine do. I hooked up the defi illum wire to the light on the cig lighter ring.

Yeah I did it when I left work and that was it.I haven't used em in so long I couldn't remember what slot.

DIm feature works but since I still have it hooked up to the Constant 12v the Illum doesn't dim whne I turn Heads on...but oh well.Everything works great.
