Gap insurance makes sure that you get back all that you owe even if the car is worth less than what you owe. It makes up for the gap between the car's assessed value and your outstanding loan amount.

Bummer man. Mine is yellow also. Almost destroyed the front end on a bear last summer. Thank god for that quick steering. I just side swiped it and put a small dent in my door. I have the gap insurance on my car to. It comes into play when you total the car. At least that is what I think. Let's say a car is totaled, and the owner owes the bank $25k on the loan still. His car is worth $20k, and that is what the insurance company will give you. But that means there is a difference of $5k to be covered. The gap insurance will cover that difference. If you did not have it then you would have to pay the difference youself. The value of they car is like the blue book value, not the value of it after it was totaled. I have had personal expierence with totaling something, just not with the gap. I totaled one of my motorcycles like 7 years ago. Fortunately the bike was worth about $1500 more than I owed, so the insurance paid of the rest of the loan and I got a check for $1500. If there was a negative difference between the value and what I owed, then I would have to pay out of my own pocket. The business guy at the dealership that basically the banks did this because people would buy new cars, and finance most of the price, then the car would be totaled and the people would not be able to cover the difference. That is basically how it works to the best of my knowledge.

gap insurance is smart on a brand new car, and on cars that you expect to pile up a ton of mileage on. sucks about it all... Id want to bildfold the dog's owners and make them walk across the highway.
