One other thing that could have a large impact on VIII and iX values is how well (or bad) the X turns out. There have been some cases where new models end up not meeting market and consumer demand driving up the value on its predacesor. This has happened in recent times with BMW and some of there less well recived newer designs. A similar effect has also happened with the new mustang. The 05 was so hard to get it was beging to drive up the value on all of the older mustangs as well. This has senes cooled now that more of the new stang are on the market. I share this just to prove a point. In short it all comes down to suply and demand.
A better comparison might be with the 3000gt, the Rx7tt, and the 300zx, and the Eclipse GSX. If you find one thats cherry and hasn't been abused, they still fetch a nice sum but the other stuff hasn't kept anywhere near the resale value of the above mentioned toyotas. I would expect the Evo to fall in line with this stuff more than a Supra.

2 years from now - 18k
Not this a real gauge of anything but the local honda store has an 03 Evo on the lot with $25,995 in the window. I'm sure they plan on getting beat down a couple of grand but that is still $22-23,000. Not too bad.
Well, I am not entirely sure of a 2003 but this was posted for an article on CNN.com not too long ago. I am not sure if it was here or another forum...
Resale Value for 2005
It shows a 2 year reatined value of 68% and a 5 year of 53% which was also the highs of most of the other classes.

Not quite. I think there were around 90K 300ZX's sold, but I don't know the break down is for turbo cars, compared to only about 11K Supras total. The 3000GT was the most prolific and longest running. 150K units total if you count the Stealths too.
The best example of the cars you mentioned, I think, is the RX-7. It doesn't have Supra reliability, but quite the contrary, is noted for its frailty, but it is rare and clean low mileage FD's fetch a good price despite that fact. I think they'd be worth more then Supras if they had a more robust engine and had had a starring role in a certain movie.
