Dog Box

Can somebody explain me what this is?

I see people having them on Skylines and other vehicles, but I tried to search and came up empty. I thought it's a sequantial transmission, but then found a video of R32 Skyline, which seem to have a hard time engaging in a gear and wasn't sequantial. So what is it? and what is the advantage as they seem to be pretty expensive?

Thanks.

PS Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

i believe that dogboxes do not use synchros but instead doggears or some kind of "ring". Sorry, I wasn't much help.

Wow.. I thought a DSM dogbox tranni was expensive, apparently It's almost 10g's for Shep to make one for your evo. Anyways, to answer part of your question... There are some major modifications required to make a dogbox tranni, and they are build to hold a #^% load of power. It's hard to engage because it's a race-only tranni. Buy one for your evo, and it'll take what ever you can throw at it. Take a look here at Shep's Dogbox: http://www.sheptrans.com/stage5.php?vid=evo

You basically have to rev match in order to get it into gear. Sounds like fun for the street, doesn't it?

Arent they made with straight cut gears (hence the whining noise) so that way if you rev match then you do not need to use the clutch, you just need to slam it into gear?

I don't know if this 32's HKS 6-speed is a dog box, but look at how much fun this tranny is (first vid):

kinda off the topic, but i think this web site, in addition to a tech review of their own zero shift tranny, they compare it to a dog box...
anyway, check it out

sorry, i checked the web site again after a few months and they appear to have changed it to more of a coporate/investment slant and less tech info than before. sorry, but there are some links to articles that probably compare the two

So... without synchros... don't you have to double-clutch?

nope, it's also known as a "crash box". I've had one in my race car before. They're very loud (straight cut gears) and they have a loud audible and tactile clunk when you shift, especially at low rpms.
