ATI Damper

One of my friends works at ATI ( http://www.atiperformanceproducts.com/ ). As you may know, they are just putting into production a new damper for the 4g63 and 4g64. He said that if I get together 10 people (evo's and dsm's together), he could probably give us a good price.

Here are some pics of the EVO damper:

If you plan on going over 9500 RPM, they have upgraded o-rings for the dampers. Does not change the price. The dampers are rebuildable as the o-rings will wear out over time, but the rebuild interval for less than 800 hp cars is every 10 years. Rebuild price is $65 from ATI if you ever needed one.

The main difference in cost for this damper vs. competitors is the fact that ATI builds a custom hub and timing gear to better transfer the vibration into the damper. This is a much improved design over just bolting on a damper to the stock timing gear (as in fluidampr).

The damper is SFI approved and is also already drilled to accept an aftermarket trigger wheel (for those using an aftermarket EMS).

With 10 dampers, price would be $415 shipped per damper. With more, might be able to do a bit less.

It appears to be a great product... however, I don't see sales going through the roof due to cost, and complexity of install. Average Joe can replace the OE balancer to other ones with simple hand tools in less than an hour. This would step way outside that realm having to yank the timing belt and re-time the rotating assembly. I personally would like to install one of these if I were rebuilding the engine though...

To those making the torque and running the RPM to necessitate something like this, the extra couple hours labor for install is no big deal. I have replaced multiple cranks on different cars due to failures caused by torsional vibration. Some broken in two pieces, some with flywheels practically welded onto them through friction welding. I will try and dig up the photos I have of this and post them up so people can see first hand what happens.

Now that a proper damper is available, it seems academic, to choose the labor to install a damper vs. replacing a crankshaft/flywheel/clutch plus whatever else internally gets destroyed.

Hmm, you can get a fluidamper for $300 and its SFI Approved as well. It doesnt appear to have the timing belt sprocket though.

hmm, great quality. but still price is a little high for someone who cannot re-time everything because they will have to add in labor to it. either way bump for a nice looking product.

I was building aircraft when many members were just a twinkle in their daddy's eye. I've also seen many a grenaded import motor, and agree with you on the merit of the product. However, other than the hardcore dedicated sanctioned racer, I believe these are going to be a hard sell do to price point, and cost of install. I'm not knocking the product at all... It appears top notch... however overkill for the average.
