Can someone please explain the difference between cams: 264, 272, and 280

I don't really know what this means, someone wanna clear this? What is a good combination? Are HKS 264's good and what problem will I have with them?

I am usually not one of the people who just chime in and says search, but there are countless threads on this. You also need to be specific and state what your plans and goals are. Do you plan on running stock turbo? What kind of racing, if any, will you be doing? Is your evo your daily driver? You must keep all of these questions in mind when you are trying to decide between them...the difference in numbers of cams are the "Grind" they are...different manufacturers can have different lift specs on similar grind cams...a newbie way of looking at it is this....if you plan on going straight up 264's, you will have nice low end grunt. This will benefit you if you like to go track racing, auto-crossing and even drag racing...272's are a good mid-range setup and 280's are very aggressive and good for top end power (mostly for upgraded turbos)...you can also have a combination of cams. Many people have the 264-intake cam and 272-exhaust cam so they get the best of both worlds. HKS are one of he most popular brands for the Evo and I even run them so you don't have to worry about the quality.

Sorry, I've tried to read the other threads... but it's hard to understand them. I need it broken down easier. I enjoy tracking the car, so I am more focused on mid range and low end. I want to keep the stock valve train. People have suggested getting comp cams instead of the hks. No one has really clarified if you can keep the stock valve train with the comp cams. I just don't understand the difference between 264's, 272's, and combos.

The number signifies the amount of degrees of crank rotation that the valves stay open. The higher the number the longer the valves remain open letting in more air/fuel or letting out exhaust. But like previously stated their are benifits and downsides to each. If you are staying with the stock turbo I'd recommend a 264 setup or 264/272 combo to retain good idle and vacuum.
If you plan to uprgrade your turbo I'd go straight 272's unless you plan to race a lot and don't mind an extrememly lumpy idle go 280's.
I am currently running GSC PowerCams with 272i/264e on my stock turbo. I will be upgrading the exhaust cam to a 272 when my 50R turbo is installed.

For you I would recommend the HKS 272's.

You don't seem to know much about how to pick cams and what the specs mean so, you probably want the most generic cams that still have good gains, don't require upgraded valve springs and, these are probably the most widely used cams for the Evo right now.

That means there are quite a few people who offer through the mail tunes and lots of readily available information for and about these cams.

No injectors but, you should get a fuel pump and a retune.

phatman...

Jun 272's are actually being proven right now to offer more power than HKS 280's...however they're expensive as hell.

The 264/272 combo is good for stock turbos and generally street driven vehicles. Lookin for more punch, 272's all around and the extreme would be 280's but the JUN's are generally more nasty across the board.

I have stock injectors with my cams but I'm also using a SAFC-II. If you get cams I suggest you get some kind of tuning, such as ECU flash or a piggy-back controller.

The Jun's also require upgraded valve springs which he said he doesn't want to get into.

ayayaya. this is so hard to figure out... if you know anyone selling hks 272's hit me up. I'm thinking 272's will be pretty safe if i plan on upgrading my turbo later on. They will also still pack a punch.
