Temperature connection knob adjustment trouble?

Hi, I have an 03' evo with 45k on it. Ever since it was brand new the Temperature adjustment knobhas been sticky when turning the knob from cold to hot and, vice versa. Throughout the course of my ownership the knob became harder and harder to adjust. Until finally the knob broke right off the shaft. After looking at an the shop manual it seems that the Air Mix Door Cable Connection thing is probably not lubed up or something. I know what most people are thinking. Why didnt I take care of this while the car was under warranty? Well, I live in Los Angeles and really never use the heat. Also, the door was always sticky but with enough pressure it would switch from cold to hot or hot to cold. It was pretty bad at 41k when I brought the car in for a new clutch but didnt even consider getting it repaired because the cluch cost so much. Oh I forgot the good news, now the car will only blow HOT air even when the fan is swithched to off. I used needle nose pliers and tried to force the the broken shaft over to cool air but its stuck. I called the Dealer Thursday after temps reached an all time high fro Spring in LA and they quoted me a price over $500 to get it fixed. $300 for parts and $250 for labor. Has anyone had a similar problem with there Evo?Any resposes or advice is appreciated, thank you.

Yes, it's a common problem with all Lancers, not just the Evo. I'm 99% certain there is a TSB regarding this and I see no reason why your dealer shouldn't perform the work regardless of warranty status.

TSB=Technical Service Bulliten. My Evo does it too. I'm gonna mention it when I take it in for 30k service.

I had mine fixed free under warranty last year. It's listed on my copy of the work order as "REPLACE THE LINKAGE---PER TSB-04-55-003.

The service manager said it was a 3 or 6 dollar part. I don't remember how long it took them to replace it, maybe 15-30 minutes? If all you did was break the knob, add $2 and no extra time to the equation from what I can see.

Thank you, but the knob broke off, it isnt whats broken. Sorry, I should have specified the little plastic shaft tip that the temperature connection knob snaps on is broken. So my Service Advisor advised, that I have to have all the linkage and entire face of Heating/AC system replaced (including the fan and vent selection control knobs).
Apparently, the parts are not available for individual sale.
I went to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation web page and read there is a TSB for this problem. What does this mean, if anything? All responses are greatly appreciated thank you.

Yeah, I was (wrongly) thinking the knob was directly attached to the linkage and also that it was just the knob that was broken.

I hope your Service Advisor is wrong. To have to replace all that would suck. So much for getting it fixed for 5-10 bucks (in parts).

As far as TSBs, they're sent out to dealers (known problems) and tell them what the fix is.

Good luck.

Yep mine does this too, thinking about just replacing the part myself though. I don't trust Mitsu techs!

Replacing the linkage doesn't do it...well not in my case anyways. They tried that first on my car and it did not solve the problem. They then had to replace the whole box. Now everything works smoothly.
