that's a total falsehooh... almost every year toyota camry and honda accord are at the top of that list.

 

I thought the EVO would not start without the immobilizer key being within 3 feet of the steering column? What gives? How are they able to steal them?

WASHINGTON -- The Cadillac Escalade, the bold and shiny luxury sport utility vehicle popular with Hollywood's A list, rappers, and star athletes, apparently also attracts an ill-intentioned constituency: car thieves.

Escalade had the highest rate of insurance theft claims for the fourth straight year, according to a study released today by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It was followed by the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and the Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab pickup.

The Highway Loss Data Institute, an affiliate of the insurance institute, noted the Escalade offers plenty to tempt thieves, from chromed wheels and leather seats to rear-seat DVD systems.

``This is the car that Tony Soprano drives. It's seen in a lot of rap videos. There are a lot of NFL players who are photographed in it," said Kim Hazelbaker, senior vice president of the Highway Loss institute.

The institute calculated which newer vehicles were most likely to be stolen by assessing theft claims per 1,000 insured vehicles from model years 2003 to 2005. The Escalade had a claim rate of 13.2, while the Lancer Evolution had a rate of 11.9.

The lowest-ranking vehicle, the Ford Taurus station wagon, had a rate of 0.3, followed by the Pontiac Vibe 4-wheel drive at 0.4, and the Buick LeSabre and Park Avenue, both at 0.5. Cadillac, a unit of General Motors, sells its 2007 Escalade at a starting price of $57,280.

Hazelbaker said about one-fourth of the claims for the Escalades were for $40,000 or more, providing evidence that thieves were stealing the entire vehicle.

Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell said the theft rate was ``an unfortunate byproduct of the desirability of the vehicle." The 2007 model comes equipped with an improved antitheft ignition immobilizer.

Interesting, I'm wondering if the ignition immobilizer feature in the EVO IX (is it in the older models?) is defeatable? Seems the only way to steal it without the key would be a tow truck.

 

If you look at the list with the Evo on it, it says per thousand vehicles. Which I interpret as per thousand of that model of vehicle.

I think this is the low volume of the Evo making it look worse then it is. The percentage looks worse because there are not as many on the road as accords and camries.

 

there are not many Evo's on the road but those that are on the road are stolen at a high percentage. thats all the article is saying. Just remember to invest in a good alarm and watch where you park your Evo.

 

It was on Headline news this morning also which is more or less National. Like one other poster said, it is claims per 1000 insured. Of course there are always going to be more accords stole as there are loads of them.

But the percentage of evos being stolen in 2005 was HIGHER!

 

Aren't they talking about attempted breakins and actual stolen cars. So all those jerks stealing wheels, seats ect are included ?

 

I thought the same thing. I didn't think you could steal. I have heard of lots of break ins but not many stolen.

Are you kidding? You think Mitsubishi is the only company that has this technology? Almost every manufacturer, especially those of the cars on that list have some sort of immobilizer anti theft device. That isn't going to stop a determined theif who knows how to bypass the system, or one that will yank your isht onto a flatbed truck and cart it off. What good will immobilizer do if you are carjecked at gunpoint with your keys in the ignition?

 

i wonder how many evo's have salvaged titles.......grimey.
