transfer case whine
transfer case whine
what does this sound like? do you hear it at idle? does it change on or off throttle?
does it sound like the tone from the emergency broadcast system?
I'm hearing a very faint noise that kinda sounds like the emergency broadcast system stupid tone when i'm at a stop light and the radio is off. it's very faint.

Well I don't recall hearing this noise for that long, but it's so faint I might just not have heard it before. It sounds like an electronically made tone, but it's not..... i've shut the radio completely off and have still heard it.
youll know if its whining. My 03 did it on all 3 of the transfer cases it had. Sounds like a metal grinder of sorts... Always while deccelerating, although I could also hear it a little while accelerating...

I had mine replaced recently and had it in there whining for about 5k miles so I know how it progresses...
All noises are speed dependent, it does not matter what rpm or gear you happen to be at or in, just your speed. It is also different than decell noise (which a lot of EVOs naturally have), it is initially heard on acceleration only.
first stage was a light whine only during hard, full throttle acceleration, it actually sounded pretty cool at first!
next, as you might guess, it simply got progressively louder and required less and less throttle to start the whining and it started to whine at steady speeds as well (not just accelerating as before). After a while the whining at around 80mph was pretty intense requiring my mac daddy stereo to be turned to "11" to drown it out.
Finally (it never actually failed I had it replaced) it was whinging on decell as well and you could feel it with you left foot on the dead pedal and the throttle pedal too (right foot
).
As I said initially it took several months and 5k of driving to get to the point where I said "enough is enough." I took it to the road course a few times during this period and also changed the fluid a couple of times, neither had any effect on the progression of the noise. It was the ring and pinion in my case BTW
