PROBLEM with friend's car inside, be preparred to be confused

So my buddy was driving his family to the library when he calls me in the most frantic tone ever. As he was rounding a corner, his front right side droped, a loud griding noise ensued, and the wheel was no longer in correct placement. From what I can tell, his lower support in the suspension just gave. In the pics, we disconnected the axels so don't worry about those.
Here's the damage:

Should/will the dealership cover this under warranty? There was no beating on the car in this instance and seem to have just followed Murphy's Law in this case. Help us out guys. How does this happen...

That must made him pinch it off in little *****! That's a bummer man. I'm sure Mitsubishi will warranty that.

Looks like the lower ball joint exploded, geezus. Also, where is the inner splined end of the axle?
Did he ever touch teh suspension?

It looks like the pinch bolt for the balljoint stud is missing in the picture. How about a closeup shot of that? If it is really gone, someone somewhere really screwed up....

yep pinch bolt is gone, The rest of the CV joint is still in the trans. They easily come apart when pulled enough.

Something doesn't seem right with this picture. I bet we don't know the whole story.
