Yes, it is always in your interest to contest the charges. Also you should request a copy of the police report and witness list. If they do not provide them to you before the hearing or in a timely manner (10-15 days) they will drop all charges. Also request a copy of the court summons. Often you can find something not filled out properly on either this or the police report. Something not dated correctly, lines not filled out, or anything else is grounds for dismissal.
Also, if you have a copy of the police report, you will know exactly what evidance and basis the court will be trying you on. If he says "Modified Exhaust System on Vehicle" just get a few pictures of Evo's looking like yours but with stock exhaust and a bucnh more random evo pics with stock exhaust and say "Its a factory performance car, I can understand why he thought it was modified, but its 100% unchanged and legal." And even if there are no witnesses to be called, if they do not provide you with a witness's list if requested, they must dismiss all charges.
Its not a hard ticket to get out of, just be creative.

Yeah don't hope on the fact that they mispelled anything or didn't fill anything out, thats just going in unprepared.
Take a picture of your car with the stock muffler back on, make sure the licsence plate is in the picture, or swap your plates with a similar colored car and bring that to court. They'll most likely drop the charge easily if they see that you've fixed the problem. Cops are *******s, judges like to see results and mistakes learned.

Sorry to hear that bro. Someone probably pissed on his corn flakes that morning and you got the grunt of it or dunkin donuts ran out of jelly donuts and he was a lil upset.
I would try getting a receipt from a shop showing you had the exhaust swapped. Good luck bro

Could have sworn it was "not allowed to modify it to be louder" not just not allowed to change it. You can't bank on the cop not showing up, that's a complete myth here in MA and most states. Your easiest bet would be to swap back to stock, leave it there and go to court. The other method is to learn the law and be able to prove that it wasn't modified to make the exhaust louder.
