Great job Warrtalon! You should head out to the shifter kart track this year with me there are much better tracks locally than autox tracks. I know its not the same since you are not in the evo but at least its wheel to wheel and the power to weight is amazing
AutoCross is racing in a large parking lot where you're racing against the clock. The course is setup with cones and the configuration can change as need be
HPDE or Road Racing, Time Trials, etc etc is racing on a road course that is normally from a mile and change to 3 miles (or in the case of nurberring norschleffe like 14 miles hah). The course can change but only as much as their is pavement if you know what I'm saying. There are multiple cars on the track at a time.
Warrtalon could answer your questions better, try PM'ing him as well.

A lot of the guys who are good autocrossers and racers locally also do kart racing, so I know it's awesome, but I don't have room for another hobby. I have tons of autocrosses and time trial (road racing) events this year, so I'll be busy busy.
There is a clear distinction between HPDE, road racing & time rials (also Solo I), etc.
HPDE stands for High Performance Driver Eduction. There is no start and no finish. There are no classifications. There is no racing there. You do not get a time and there is no first, second etc, places. You get an instructor in most groups that teaches you how to drive and handle your car safely and quickly. The better students may get signed off to practice on their own. There are also strict rules on passing.
Time Trial, Solo I, Solo II (Auto-x) is a timed event and clear car classifications. There are place winners. Usually it is one or 2 cars on the track at time. Depending on the event you may need several safety modifications to your car.
Road Racing is multi-car racing at a track. You need a real race car for that, and in most cases, a racing drivers license to participate.
