Titanium turbo is an Option on the non-US Evos and it isnt standard. If you already have the standard turbo, it isnt worth the trouble/cost to get the titanium turbo as the cost outweighs the benefits(which isnt that much).
Thats what i am trying tio figure out - i found titanium center carterages for about 800 and entire titamiunm turbo for 1800

I wonder if it helps make more boost on top also ? or if its just a bit fatser spool ??

As I understand it, the only thing that is titanium in the JDM Evo VII and VIII turbo is the turbine wheel/ impellor. It spools up fractionally quicker than the inconel one in the US Evo due to it's lighter weight..

So it looks like a very marginal improvement then over what we have?

I heard that the titanium turbo was tested on a JDM EVO 8 and the EVO put over 315 bhp to the wheels. This was not an FQ package either. Just a stock JDM EVO 8 with a titanium turbo option. www.evolutionimports.com shows the titanium turbo as only being $799 from the factory. Is there anyone who could import the turbo I wonder and what would be the cost. For the stock twin scroll feel and about 30+ extra hp it might be worth it. Besides, it would probably look stock, especially with the mitsu part numbers on it and probably the dealers would not be able to tell the difference and it wouldn't void your warranty. Just a thought. If a vendor here could get a cost on it I'm sure there are those like me who would be interested in purchasing it.

Pardon me for saying this but I highly doubt a stock JDM Evo 8 puts down 315bhp to the WHEELS. That figure is most likely quoted as CRANK/FLYWHEEL horsepower.

I remember reading a Japanese magazine which dyno tests the Evo VII as having 308PS or so at the crank.

Autocar june 2001

"Then comes the boost work. Warrender ups the tempo to 1.4 bar and interestingly specifies the less exotic steel turbocharger. The less lag prone titanium version may have less inertia and consequently less lag, but apparently it isn't as robust for tuning purposes. Difficult to believe but true. "

So stick with the stock turbo.

The jury is still out on which is better for building for power. The tuners seem to be split on it.

The JDM car isn't putting out better hp than the US Evo because of the turbo difference. It's getting better numbers because of differences in the ECU program.

Actaully, it must go beyond the ECU based on the dyno results I've seen, but the turbo should be the same.

Yes, I am in total agreement with the above two statements.

Edit: I just had to make the moderator hijacking complete.

And the hand-off back to the common folk:

Power increases would be attributable ECU maps with better A/F ratios and timing adjustments possible with higher quality gas. EVO VIIIs probably do not suffer from knock sensor induced timing retard and A/F richness that saps power from our stock EVOs. Spool-up and boost maps may improve drivability but not peak HP. Sustained or increased boost pressures would certainly lead to increases but I haven't read anything to indicate that the EVO VIII holds peak boost any longer than our US Lancer EVO does.

Anxiously awaiting for evidence to the contrary.

titanium

i was under the impression the titanium turbos were built to handle more of the hardcore stresses and damages that anti-lag or no wastegate setups include. The marginal quicker spoolup was just a secondary benefit.
