Question Question ---- Oil Temp?

So my IX MR has an oil temperature guage. Cool. But for the life of me I can't think of anything that guage would tell me that the coolant temp guage wouldn't. Is it possible for your oil temp to sky rocket while your coolant temp stays the same? Can a specific oil temperature indicate something that the coolant temp could not? Perhaps a faulty oil cooler? I don't know. My oil temp usually hangs out around 70 to 80 degrees.

Anybody have any ideas on the usefullness of that guage?

Coolant temp gauge tells you the temp of your coolant.
An oil temp gauge tells you the temp of your oil

hope that helps

Nope doesn't help. Looking for more of a why than a what.

Yeah The oil Temp tells u. .. umm idk what it tells you, but its cool, and kinda annoying when your doing an oil change. Mine hasn't gone over 70 yet. I think the only gauge that was actualy useful was the Boost/vac they should have put an A/F ratio and EGT or something else instead of the Volt meter. Seriously it isn't accurate the way they wired it on mine, it hooked up to the Radio's power, so when the radio is playing it drops more than when i turn my HIDs on.

Yea I totally agree with you that a A/F and EGT guage would be the most valuable. I can see the value in the Volt meter if your doing a crazy wiring setup which i'm not but oil temp? If it had to be an oil temp guage they should have hooked it up to the tranny for the tranny oil temp.

I use it to let me know when the engine is fully warmed up. The coolant heats up much quicker than the oil, and you dont want to beat on an engine that has cool, thick oil. When the oil temp goes up and stabilizes it, then I can make my right foot happy.

Yeah I don`t rip it until the oil is up to temp too, but the Volrt meter is kinda dumb, I guess i am gonna invest in a steering colomn pod and get a EGT gauge and AF gauge.

Not! The car will not run without "any" electrical power. The VM lets you know how your electrical system is performing in relation to the manufactor's spec, it can be a very useful troubleshooting tool. But since I'm an electrician.....

well most people assume that once your coolant temp gauge is in the norm it's alright to romp on the car because it's warmed up. But what they don't realize is the more important engine oil takes about 5-10 extra minutes to warm up completely. The main use of the oil temp gauge would be using it to monitor when your engine oil is up to temp.

Makes sense. I usually follow that same principle. I guess that's it's useful purpose is seeing when the engine is truely warmed up. I guess old school hardcore rally racers preferred having an oil temp guage for the same reason. So i'll continue to keep an eye on it. Although I have no idea what to do if the oil temp starts getting too high other than shut the car off and come crying to this message board.

yeah, that'd be an idea, when it gets hot, turn it off.

An oil temp gauge is great to have, when you're out on track, whats your oil temp? For that matter, whats your coolant temp? ("uhh, well, its between the two marks, kinda more than level, ehh...")

exactly. You need a gauge with marks and numbers on it to ever tell what the temp is. When you're out there and your coolant is 205-210, and oil is 260, thats good to know.
