Does Changing your crank pulley cause knock?
I have switched the stock crank pulley to a unorthodox crank pulley. Has anyone ever heard that the knock sensor, in some cases will pick up a higher count, from not having the rubber damper on the pulley?

Never heard of that....knock count should be the same because there has been no change in A/F.....although it may change timing due to the lighter weight....which is a good sign if you need to make changes to the perimeters.

I have heard a few ppl say that the vibration caused from not having the rubber on the back, fakes the knock sensor into thinking its hearing knock. Which will result in a higher number of knock, when there is no more than before.

yes that is correct. some people have reported having problems with this, while others have reported no problems. heres some reading... and try the freaking SEARCH button next time

Crank pulley DOES NOT cause knock
What happens is a stock harmonic dampner adsorbs sounds and vibrations that can fatique your motor
A lightweight crank pulley takes off some small weight but shortens your engine life (to an unkown extent)
Also a lightweight pully can trigger false knock counts and result in pulled timing

I remember reading a thread you posted way back about how you noticed many evos you were tuning that had crank pulleys were well below the HP levels they should have been because of this false knock phenomenon

What Al is saying that insted of the stock harmonic balancer dampening those vibrations and sounds they are no being heard by your knock sensor. If it hears enough it will pull timing and make your car run like crapola. In the honda days alot of people claimed that over time lightened crank pulley would ware your engine quicker do to the pulleys not being balanced properly for the cranks they were bolted too. No need for one IMO.

This is a topic that has no one answer apparently...
I always see it coming up here on evom...some say that lightweight pulleys are fine..and other say not to use them..
and it's like a 50/50 thing...
I was going to buy a set of pulleys but I changed my mind since there are so many opinions and reviews on these.
now I buy parts purely based on reviews

My take is not to use them.
The balancer is there to protect the motor. There is a considerable amount of design that goes into them. Switching out to a pulley means you get none of that...and for what? A cool looking pulley?
There are other less expensive mods that will yield better results.
OR, get a nice dampened pulley by fluidine or something.

Im taking the damn thing off today...I m switching to a BR motor here in the next few months but I drag at the track almost every week so, its not worth it something going wrong beforehand. Thanks everyone for the input. Also I thought the balance shafts would help if there were any vibrations. So in some some ways the rod and main bearings would be somewhat protected.

i put the entire unorthodox SS pulley set on my 05 and have had no issues at all....the one thing i can tell you is, if your doing the whole set, have fun, they are a PITA to do....i have heard of the "knock issues" we dont have a harmonic balancer we have a dampner, so you dont really have to worry about it.

I have a perrin lightened crank pulley installed. Its been a year already and no problms. Isnt ther two different crank pulleys on our car. One that runs the belts like AC and other stuff. Here is a pic of the silver perin puley installed and im holding the stocker. I think there is another crank pullley behind the silver one. But you cant get to it unless the engine is removed. Thats whet i heard from another member.
