You can get the cable from www.tactrix.com for $94. Then download Ecuflash for free, the purchase an email flash from someone (recommend www.jestrtuning.com ) for $50. Then you have a total of $145 and you can flash the ecu anytime you want. If you need a retune, you can get another flash for $50 since you already have the cable. Plus you can flash it back to stock anytime you want on your own.

evo_noob: Please take this as the best advice for your situation. Although others are trying to be helpful in giving you alternative CHEAPER solutions for tuning your car, the long run would be that if you tried to tune it yourself, you risk damaging your car to the point where the $500 AMS flash was just peanuts.

Honestly, you don't seem like the type that would have any experience tuning an ECU so I would NOT recommend to you to go with alternative cheaper solution. Just bite the bullet, pay the $500 for the ECU flash and you can be assured you are getting ONE OF THE BEST tuners for our Evos working on your car. I think that's worth the money IMHO.

PS: $500 vs. $350 vs. $400 is not a huge difference. Your best bet is to go with the reputation of the ECU tuner and the successes owners have had with them. AMS and Dynoflash are both good. But since you are close to AMS, I would go with them. Otherwise, you would have to wait for Al to come in your area which may be a while. Yes, Al has a mail-in flash solution, but in your case, you are comparing apples to apples which is a custom tune.
