When I test drove a EVO last week, my biggest disappointment was the lag. The WRX's little TD04 w/ it's topmount intercooler (w/ uprated Samco Y pipe), decatted uppipe, decatted bell mouth downpipe (4"->2.5") , oe third cat (SCCA ) cat back (all 2.5")- spools like nobodys business. I'm spooling in the low 2,000's and hitting 16psi at 2900 rpms.
Alfred is absolutely correct, as you increase power past 300 hp crank (the realistic limits of the little TD04/injectors) you will increase lag (bigger turbo's, bigger IC's- moving it to the front, etc), that is a fact. It is the reason I vehemently stuck w/ the TD04, for my applications (autox/rallx) spoolup is critical.
I'm curious what decreases in spool a EVO will see w/ a downpipe/exhaust change? Any other ways to decrease spool w/ the EVO?
Thanks.
