You could, theoretically, change either the intake or the exhaust cam on an Evo VIII to, let's say a 264* and leave the other cam stock. This would be a really mild setup. No one has done it as far as I know.
Is this something that you are seriously considering doing to your Evo? IMO, you would be better off doing both cams as this is proven to provide the greatest increase in horsepower at a minimal sacrifice in driveability, especially if you stay with 272's or milder.
Now, your question as to whether the Evo would make power with only one cam, was probably asked without really thinking about what you were saying, right? The Evo engine is a dual overhead cam design, and thus by definition the infernal contraption requires two camshafts(one exhaust, the other intake) to achieve at least a hope of internal combustion, even on 91 octane **** gas.
so i talked to this guy supposedly his specialty is in cam instalations and he told me that my problem maybe that the cams need some degree .,is this true ,is this the same as alingning the cams for timing?as you can already tell i know nothing of this so no jump on my case if i sound ignorant, thanks
They need some "degree"? That's all he said? Maybe he knows what that means, but you don't (as you admitted). It's possible the cam timing is off, and it's possible he's referring to using cam gears to retard or advance the timing to make the most power. A more knowledgeable person like MalibuJack or Zeus probably knows what that guy means.
It could have to do with the complexity of the MIVEC and the installation of the intake cam going wrong. Since the shop who installed the cams was not an Evo shop, you may want to have this guy take a look. I would want someone who has experience with doing cams on a _Evo_ MIVEC head, though.
