I have recently turned my EVO into a weekend car as well. It's not really a pure sports car like a porshe, corvette, etc so it's hard to get much thrill from just driving around on the street (legally).
I've found the EVO is a great competition car and I have been getting more and more into auto-x because it's by far the cheapest way to compete.
I was frustrated with auto-x as well until I got some V-710's...

I love driving my Evo everyday for the last year I have owned it....what kills me is the fact I can't do more fast driving.
Definitely getting my car setup so I can race more this next year.

To the OP I am the same way. I enjoy the build process vrs the end product. Once I get a car to where I want it, I am ready for the next project. Its a terrible and expensive addiction. Let me know if you find a cure.

Just an idea, but have you thought about drifting? I know several folks who got bored with straightline racing and couldn't stand to do auto-X who got into drifting and found a brand new reason to love their cars.
