Now, there technically IS a loophole in this problem... We are all assuming that he stops at the exact halfway point and then resumes the rest of the travel (as if the entire trip is one long highway run).
HOWEVER...
If, at the halfway point (say 40 of 80mi) he can alter the remainder of his route (like take back roads instead of highway) thereby increasing the distance of the 2nd part of his trip. Having more distance to drive gives him the ability to average out his trip to 80mph.
To throw in some numbers... If he added another 40mi to the 2nd half of the trip by taking side roads instead of highway, now his total trip should be 120mi at 80mph, which means he has 1.5hrs from the time he left to get there (120mi / 80mph = 1.5hrs). He's already 1 hour into the trip at the 40mi mark (cause he did 40mi @ 40mph = 1 hour). So he has half an hour to drive the remaining 80mi... he's gotta do 160mph at this point, and only then will he average 80mph for the whole trip.
So it CAN be done... but only if he alters his course (make it considerably longer) after realizing he can't accomplish his original goal.

This should help clear it up for anyone who still doesn’t get it:
He makes a 240mile (an arbitrary distance) trip and his timing was this:
40miles/1hour (1st hour)
40miles/1hour (2nd hour)
40miles/1hour (3rd hour)
Total of 120miles for first half of trip (in three hours)
120miles/1hour (4th hour)
Total of 120miles for second half of trip (in one hour)
Over the total 4 hours (and 240 miles) his average is 60 miles per hour
(40+40+40+120)/4 = 60
__________________________________________________ ______
Same first half but different second halves:
120miles/30mins (240mph)(only contributes as a half hour, meaning it pulls the average up just as much as 120miles/1hour) (In other words 1hour at 120mph is equal to one half hour at 240mph)
([20+20]+[20+20]+[20+20]+120)/7= 60
(half hour + half hour + half hour + half hour + half hour + half hour + half hour)/7(halfhours)
120miles/15mins (480mph)(again this contributes less than a full hour) (1 hour at 20mph is the same thing as four 15mins at 5 mph)
({[15+15]+[15+15]+[15+15]+[15+15]}+{[15+15]+[15+15]+[15+15]+[15+15]}+{[15+15]+[15+15]+[15+15]+[15+15]} +120)/25= 60
__________________________________________________ ________
So the faster he went the less time he would be spending at that higher speed, thus not helping his average out enough to ever make up the time spent at 40mph.

This is assuming a few things though, that are ambiguous in the question:
1. that when he said he is “halfway there” he means distance (most would assume he is referring to distance, but Warrtalon did “look at his watch” and then say "Damn, I wanted to do at least 80mph for the whole trip" so maybe he was only 2 hours into his 4 hour trip, not 120miles into his 240mile trip. This would change everything)
2. in the 60mph average of the examples we do not take into account the time and distance it takes for him to accelerate up to the new speed or come to a stop at the shop (probably on the dyno haha)
3. that the average he wanted to do the whole trip was a “mean” average and not a
median or mode average.
4. the weight Warrtalon’s ego did not help or harm his average speed/ blur his ability to read his mph.

Hope that helped.
