My car is Whining.... :-(

Ok guys, This is getting worse and worse! My car ever since I have owned it new has always had a Transmission whine! I hear its normal, it was never anything that really bothered me! However, recently its getting worse and worse, Its progressively worse when I'm on a roll and put it in Neutral and just let the car coast in neutral, this happens pretty much at any speed! Car is an 03' w. 36k on the clock, I just replaced the tranny and x-fer case fluid. Didn't make any difference! Becides the whine the car works great! Any thoughts what it is! Should I be worried, its pretty loud! Almost sounds like a fire tuck siren!

drivetrain fluid intervals are 30K normal driving and 15K extreme conditions, but i'd reccommend every 10K at least. usually siren sounds are the transfer case, you sure it's not leaking and you filled it the whole way?

Well..

Well, I had the 03 TSB recalls done on my tranny about 10k ago...I changed the fluids today actually and I barely had any fluid in the x-fer case So I'm willing to bet they forgot to fill it, or filled it half way! Its supposto have .58 liter of fluid, only about half a cup came out! No signs of a leak!

Depends on the year too.. The 05+ have the ACD so they are generally a bit more expensive... I gave $1500 (plus shipping) for the used one I bougt out of a wrecked 05 with 21k miles on it.. Didn't have much luck at all when I was looking for a used one to buy mine so I just got this one, possibly could've found one slightly cheaper..

BTW MRs weren't available til 05 so the ACD transfer cases don't apply to the poster since he has an 03..

That usually indicates the t-case. You can find the cost of a TRE build by going to the TRE website...

Shep is the man for these things, too:

Its your transfer case bro Thats the reason I got rid of my 03 in the first place. It starts out real faint, then gets louder and louder. The sound should be coming from the driver side, right under your feet. Good luck and yeah Shep is the best way to go, although I hear he gets his parts from Shearer??

Racingevo8,

It has been addressed a few times recently that even filling up the transfer case can be a tricky issue. There are a few methods of filling it up(from the top with a long tube, with a pump, with a big surenge) but the real trick is the air being capture inside due to the thickess of the oil itself.

The filling must allow the transfer case/transmission,reardiff to "burp". You must take your time and double check. Sometimes it will falsy overfill, that is esxcatly what I am talking about.

Anyway, I relate the noise to previously low transfer case/transmission fluid. I recently completely fried my Dodge Stealth transfer case by not having sufficient fluid. Your description fits my explanation.

Carlos

i just recently got the death whine from the t-case. i had a huge oil leakage from the t-case somewhere. i just ordered a new driveshaft seal and hope that's the problem. if not, i'll be sending my t-case to Shepherd or TRE for a rebuild. it would also be a good time to install a front lsd.

to avoid this i usually drive it down the street to a court and drive two full circles each way, and then go back home and refill. it always ends up taking more after that.
