Mitsubishi to offer chip for Evolution as an option end of June
I hope that they provide this option. I have never seen a RalliArt product, but I hear it's quality stuff. But IF they do, I'm willing to bet that it will have the "off road use only" label attached. They may be offering it in other countries and selling it with a warrenty but they won't do it here. My reasoning for this is based on the Prodrive/STi Subaru after market parts relationship. I know that for the Subaru, Prodrive in England sells their upgrade and you get to keep your warrenty (I'm sure built into the price of the kit). Can someone chime in and give me a clue as to why they won't do it here?
first off, Prodrive is a seperate company - Ralliart is to Mitsubishi as STi is to Subaru. Prodrive does aftermarket modifications to Subarus with Subaru's blessing (I guess anyway, cause the cars maintain their warranty). Many tuners in the US have proven that the difference between the world spec Evo and the US spec Evo is simply a matter of ecu management.
I could certainly see MMC wanting to get into some of the aftermarket dollars that are going to be spent in this market. Why not sell you a car and then sell you upgrades right away? That business model has worked brilliantly for Dell/Compaq/etc for years....

Keep dreaming. Mitsu has always kept the EVO in the 270's ish even against other competitors that had much more. Might we mention the S202? In their minds they have no reason to add more hp. At this point sales are going very well and there is no need to add anything. Now if sales were horrible and the STI was kicking their butt then sure they would react, but as for now, they have no reason to anything but keep on the same path of success, why mess up a good thing is all automobile manufacturers thinking.
Just a note: f1mania did tell us the price of the Evo before Mitsu announced it at the LA Auto Show. Let's just hope this chip upgrade is true too.

Already out in the UK
I just got through reading and article in EVO magazine (It's a british car magazine) ANd they already have a 300hp verson of the evo out over there. You guys might want to check it out. At there nearest bookstore. It's a big article you can't miss it.
It's gonna take more than an ECU upgrade to significantly bump the performance numbers and still meet 50 state EPA requirements.
There are more than just ECU differences between the US Lancer Evolution and the Evolution VIII offered to the rest of the world.
I would like to see it as much as the next guy but don't hold your breath.
My input, for the record, is "NO WAY"

According to what I have read the only reason we don't have a 300hp version is do to our tree-hugging pollution legislation.
By that logic if the chip did make it here I would have to believe it would be for off-road use only. Bye -bye warranty.

will the overseas members provide us with the jdm spec service manual while the us spec evo manual is still available online so we can see where the difference lies?
All they (Mitsubishi engineers) gotta do to bump the EVO HP into the STi range is to hold boost out to redline. That's a simple table mod in the ECU data section. Has anyone come up with a viable explanation for why they dropped boost after 4500 RPM anyway?
Arguments related to EPA/Carb requirements are not really appropriate as we're only talking WOT performance numbers here. Mitsubishi runs WOT fuel tables into the 9.5:1 A/F ratio range at high airflow in stock form. Talk about dumping hydrocarbons out the exhaust. Hell, it might even be BETTER emissions at WOT to lean the mixture out a bit. I don't know for sure because I don't know the tradeoffs under those conditions between NOx and hydrocarbon output, but I gotta think it's better to run leaner than 9.5:1.
Mitsubishi didn't tune their open loop (WOT) tables for emissions. They tuned it for motor safety. If they determine the publicity they can get from offering a chip upgrade for their top of the line performer outweighs the potential risks for blowing a motor or two (minor risk really, considering the EVO engine make up), then why not!?
Mitsubishi isn't releasing EVO ECU reprogramming capability to dealers until late June anyway. Maybe the two will coincide. Release the programming feature and an EVO update at the same time. Might make sense.
