Just change it just like the above thread said do it while the belts are already off, I like to save money in the long run, not just to save a few right now, I HATE to pay for labor Id rather put speed parts onto the car........ You can do what you want.

Buck I hope your pump lasts till 120k I really do, but like the above post the three dealers I have delt with dont know anything about evos, one tried to put tranny fluid into my diffs and xfer case. But then again its a I know some one who knows someone story.

I WILL without a doubt cange it all at one time myself for FREE! But the again I only work 9 days a month so I have more luxuary for free time then most......

So pay $700-800 at 60k for all the belts and water pump, or listen to Buck and
wait til it goes out and pay another $500-600 to replace the water pump. Not to
mention a tow if it overheats on the hway and you don't have enough water...
or worse yet, you warp a head.

Either way, it won't last forever. So just make it a habit to change while the front
of the motor is apart. It's called preventive maintenance, not wait til it breaks
maintenance.

These cars have not been on the road here long enough to get a reliability history
on them. But judging from MY 1g and 2g DSMs,the water pumps can go anytime
after 60k. Why even chance it? The ENGINE IS APART FOR THE T-BELT ANYWAY !!!

Nobody's here is saying go by the manual. Those numbers are greatly reduced to
what they really should be. The OEM has to cover their backs. And I'm not trying
to scare you either. Just being logical about it. Don't have the dough? Wait a few
miles and save up for the water-pump. Just don't go stressing your engine after
60k and you should be fine. Get the OEM stuff from a vendor here.

Get the OEM stuff. It worked to get you here so it should be fine for another few thousand.
Plus if you get them to do it, they'll only work with OEM parts.

And in my area the Mitsu. dealer DON"T know **** !!!
I usually TELL THEM about TSBs, RECALLS, and fixes for minor quirks.
My syncros, stiff A/C controls, and CF wing fade was all covered by them
AFTER I told them about a TSB or fix for it.
Hell they did not even know what an Evo WAS in 2002 !!!

I'm speaking from experience. Are you Buck ?

7 - 90-94 Eclipses and Talons
4 - 97-99 Eclipses Still own 3
Easy killer. Who in there wright mind "wait til it goes out" with anything? And are you that stupid that you think "they have not been on the road here for that long?" Hello, why do you think we started with the Evo 8, its the same basic engine Mitsubishi has used for years! Even in their rally cars (although highly modified) still same bloc and engine type. I can't help that your Mitsu dealer is retarded. Sorry to break your glass house but ever try another dealer if its such a problem? So just to understand you correctly we should "make it a habbit to change everytime the front of the engine is apart?" Dude who has a habbit of changing their water pump? let alone having the front of the engine apart so often? I see you have experience since you own or touched 19 Eclipses, talons jeeps whatever. But yes I do have first hand experience, I had a 1997 Eclipse GS-T and blew a head gasket. And they replaced the waterpump as well. But that was 10 years ago, Eclipses talons have a different engine, still same dealer and same mechanic that works on my Evo now and the one who inspected everything while doing timing/balence belt change! I'm still on stock clutch at 66k! I highly recommend reading this thread https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=248747 There are several posts who have Evo's with high mileage and stock water pump etc. I will say it again, I am not advocating "never change your water pump until you reach XX miles, I am just saying that they will last long enough (if you keep your car that long) for the secong timing belt change which in my opinion 100k is the maximum I would wait for that service.

Anyone that claims that a 4g63 timing belt on an Evo is a 1 hour job, I have a job offer for.

Or I suspect they have never done the job before.

^ You're right I posted out of anger. It will take you a little longer than a hour to do just the timing belt probably like 2 and more like 3-4 if you doing the water pump and balance shaft belts. The more you do it the quicker at it you get though.

Oh and I have done it before Ill change my anger statement.

i say if you have the funds for everything (water pump/tensioner/etc) go for it. definately. just to be on the safe side. but if you're tight on money i'd say just do the timing belt and balencer belt. i have 56k and am in the same situation. if i have enough money at the time, i'm buying everything all at once. better safe then sorry

I work on my own cars after going through 2 dealers and 3 cars !!! Thank you.

Eclipses, Talons and Lasers have the same engines. 4g63T, 4g63NA and the 1.8L.
Non turbo ,2gs ,95-97 had the neon motor 420a the converitable has the 4g64a, get it right man.
The 4g63T that's in the Evo is the same with mods for higher HP/durability.

GL on that 100k timing belt change. That's why the majority of DSMs are in the
wrecker yards now. Nice body and interior, bad engine. T-belt broke....people
taking chances with maintenance. That's cool though, I'll be there picking the
bones and reselling the parts. I met a guy on the side of the road with a beautiful
97 Eclipse with 169k on the OEM T-belt !!! It finally broke. Sucks for him. I can go on,
and on dude....but I digress. The answer has been posted for the umpteenth time. I'm done.

Duhh, the 4g63 has varients! But the Plymouth Laser and the Evo are SIMILAR obvioulsy NOT THE SAME. I diden't realize you would take my statement so literally! So its official the origional Timing belt can go 169k!!!!!! All this time I was refering to the 2nd timing belt replacment. And you say the "Evo engine is for higher HP/durability", very true I guess just not until 169k!?

I remember reading that the IX timing belt was made stronger and will last to 100k, hence the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty Do any of you with a 9 have a t-belt change in the service record book? I don't remember seeing one.

No you don't because the belt is the same. Furthermore, the 2005 model year had 10/100k warranty.

I've been thinking of trying one, it's time for my 60k maintenance. Or would it be wise to get the Gates set with the T-belt and balance belt and do them both at the same time along with pump/tensioners/etc.? Honestly I can't really afford the $700 or so the dealer wants to do this work, so I might as well pick a weekend and do it myself...considering all the Subaru ej20 and ej25 belts/pumps/tensioners I've done, this should be a walk in the park lol (plus the countless hundreds of Honda sohc and dohc T-belts).

If you're changing it before or at 60k, just do the belts and tensioner. Wait till 120k to change everything. Pumps and pulleys last longer than you think.
I also use all factory parts.
