Ticket help
I was given a ticket today for 18 over in a 30 mph zone. My question is do cops have to keep you in sight after they clock your speed? The cop clocked my speed and then he made a u-turn in the middle of the road. He lost sight of me and I turned into a neighborhood and pulled into a driveway. He passed the house then saw me on his return trip out of the neighborhood. Should I get a lawyer and beat the case?
were you speeding?
There is an equation that is solved by using the time it takes for the cars to pass each other and how fast he was driving. If he knew that he can easily know how fast you were going?
Like one of those elementary school words problems...

Did he turn his lights on once he saw you? Or did he just turn around and chase you? I have heard that if you pull over and turn off your car (before they turn on the lights) then they cant do anything. But if they already are in persuit it wont matter if you stop or loose sight of him.
But that story reminds me of something similar...I was going down a street and a cop went to turn around right before I went to turn into my friends apartment complex. I gunned it into the complex but he saw me turne and freaked on me for turning. HE kept asking me why I turned, who lives here, etc. It was hysterical.

O.P. - You may be able to beat a surcharge with traffic school, but speeding is speeding... it's not likely to be 100% dismissed
So you can do 90mph in a school zone while cutting off an emergency vehicle and WOT on your test pipe, but as long as you veer to the curb and shut off the engine, the cop can only drive by and say "SHUCKS! I DIDN'T TURN MY LIGHTS ON FAST ENOUGH!"

the tickets yours dude....he had the right to give it because you were speeding on a public road......get this one..: by law they do NOT have to use the radar gun to give you a ticket......in police training they have to look at a car and get the MPH within +or-2MPH (i think its 2) like 10 times in a row. this is the CHUBBY OF JUSTICE

You heard wrong. Turning on the light has nothing to do with anything. If you are already pulled over...done. The lights are used to signal you that you should pull over. But since you are already over...
The officer saw your car, clocked it, remembered it and got you. They can lose sight of you as long as they can describe your car and remeber what it looked like.
Hopefully the driveway was somebody you know. If you pull your car in someone elses driveway that you don't know and park it there...that is considered trespassing. If you "gun it" to get away ( Which clearly you are doing) the cop could be a dick and get you for fleeing ( Not likely, but I have seen it before).

How old are you and do you have a clean record? If so try for court supervision like stated before. Do what you can to keep the ticket off of your record. Some states let you pay double and they drop the charge. It's all a money racket, sometimes safety can be involved, but for the most part, monies monies monies.

Some of you guys are hilarious. Where do you guys get rules about speeding, turning lights on, or losing sight?
Cops dont need to turn lights on, keep sight of you or to get you on radar to give you a citation for speeding. When you get a ticket, all the ticket is doing is saying that the officer has reasonable belief/evidence a violation or crime has been committed. Statutes for speeding are not written with much complexity. Nowhere in any statute that I have come across does it say in order to charge you with violating a statute the attesting officer has to turn his lights on, get you with radar, etc.
What may happen if an officer loses sight of you, or doesnt get you on radar is the creation of reasonable doubt that you violated said statute. The more reasonable doubt the more chance you will be found not guilty of the crime/violation. Because the cop didnt have his light on, he probably figured he couldnt prove you were evading responsibility beyond a reasonable doubt. But like I said, it is hardly believable that there are these so called rules saying cops have to have you on radar or have to have their lights on.
