My '05 VIII is stock.

My transmission is making a loud whine when downshifting in any gear. The whine lasts for the duration it takes me to take my foot off the clutch pedal. At first it was only doing it from 3rd to 2nd, but now it does it in all gears.

Some background: my clutch sometimes shudders when pulling away in first, but holds very strong and I have never had any slip issues. The shudder has been happening for about a year now. The car has 26,000 miles and absolutely everything on it is perfect. It has been hovering around 10 degrees F all week outside.

Does anyone know what this might be? I am planning on taking it in to the dealership on Monday, but I don't want them to say "it's your clutch", and then spend a grand on a new one, only to find the problem persists.

 

sounds to me like you have exedy clutch haha belive it or not thats the ONLY clutch that really chatters alot and whines with downshifting.........either that or some kinda other tiwn plate......there is a lil peep hole with a rubber groment under the tranny you can look in there and see what color the pressure plate is

 

The '05 VIII comes stock with an Exedy-made clutch, I thought.

My car is definitely stock - it had close to zero miles on it when I bought it as the first owner, so I can't see it having a non-stock clutch.

 

I also have the same problem on my '03 VIII, and i have about 25K miles on it and i bought the car brand new and i know i have a stock clutch with the same problem ksattic described. Mitsubishi dealership told me it was my clutch that was going out and it's time to get a new one!!!

 

its probably your transfercase making that sound, what oil did you put in your transfercase, if it isnt straight 90W. next time you do your transfercase if you have lots of metal shavings, your transfercase is going out because you put 75w-90 in it or something like that.

Stick to straight 90 weight, not multigrade.

 

Yes, sure it's not the turbo. I don't have my foot on the gas very much, and the turbo whine is a lot higher in pitch.

I have all the suggested Mitsu fluids in the car - nothing has changed.

Funnily enough, the sound stops when the temperature outside gets warmer, regardless of how long I have been driving.

I am also thinking it's the clutch. I hope it's not the transfer case, but if it is, at least it's under warranty.

 

I have never been in an EVO that didnt have the infamous decel noise. It got really loud after the aftermarket clutch. No biggie just turn up the radio.

Mitsu does have a TSB regarding the decel noise they say its normal due to the nature of the AWD system. Ill find the TSB and post it https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...leration+noise here is a link to the thread with the TSB jus scroll down a bit

 

I actually had that noise happen to me when it was really cold. it only happened once and it was 26 degrees out. i drove when the car was bone cold (late for work), and it was coming from the transfer case. after it warmed up though, no more noise. it might be the transfer case. hard to say if it's normal or not without hearing it. my car whines also. (only in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.) it's normal if it doesn't get louder as you go faster. it should be relatively quiet at some point.
