Conductors can make that. Engineers can easily net $130K. It all depends on your seniority and how greedy you are and what railroad you work for. Most conductors on the BNSF start out making no less than $70K in their first year.

According to Monster.com, base pay for a locomotive engineer is about $70K, with 75th percentile reaching $85K.

I'd believe that working for a shortline 4 days a week. I made more than that my first year out as a switchman. Don't believe everything Monster.com says.

Congrats on the new IX SE, sounds like being in the train business is profitable. How long did it take you to learn to be a conducter and all 70K sounds good to me?

It takes 6 weeks of college coursework at the NARS facility in Overland Park, Kansas. As long as you pass the 280 question exam with a 90% or better, you will get picked up by a class I railroad. On the BNSF, I had to go through another 13 weeks of class/OJT. It can really be a cush job too. I went in at 2234 Monday night and basically sat on a locomotive for 7.5 hours and got paid $196 for it. We literally did nothing. Other days they can work you 12 hours and call you back 10 hours later for another 12. That's where overtime plays in.

Back on subject: Thanks a lot for the comments guys. The '06 is so much smoother than my '03 ever was. The shifting is obviously still notchy but it is slowly getting better. I have so much crap waiting to go on and I keep buying more stuff and amassing it in my spare bedroom. If I ever decide not to be lazy, I'll get to work.
