Rod Knock??

How can you tell the difference between a slight rod knock and just normal engine noise?

I may be just paranoid, but is there some way to tell?
The car only has a TBE, and seems to drive fine.

Thanks!

If your car is stock besides your TBE its pretty safe to say you dont have rod knock.

You will know when its rod knock, trust me. Its very loud. Sounds like someone taking a jack hammer to your block.

What exactly are you hearing? The only thing I could think of is lifter noise. It's a stock block so it can't be piston slap. A rod knock would be pretty damn loud. How many miles you have on it?

yes, similar to a small jackhammer in your engine that increases with rpm. very loud, you'd know something's wrong.

41k

It seems to drive fine but when i go up in rpms im either hearing a very faint rod knock or its normal and im being paranoid. I was wondering if there was any way to troubleshoot this.

have you checked oil? low oil can cause some tapping in the valvetrain. also, next time you drain it, you can buy a cone with a screen to let the oil drain through. if you're getting rod knock, more than likely, you'll have metal shavings from bearing material in the oil. that's something you could check to troubleshoot.

Shouldn't be hearing any kinda knock. You using 93 octane? I know certain fuels can make a pinging noise. Kinda hard to trouble shoot it without hearing the noise. The mileage is low to be having any rod failure unless you beat the **** outa your car. When you hear the noise, does it match the rpms? What I mean is does it knock faster as you give it gas?

I use 93 octane religously, and do not beat on the car, i maybe it full boost once or twice a week. It does seem that the "noise" does follow the RPMs, but i am not sure if it is normal with this engine because i know the evo tends to be noisy.

All I can say is take it to someone to check it out(someone you trust of course, don't want them to tell you it's the muffler bearings). Did you buy it used? I got mine used and the dealer put it back to stock. When they put the stock cams back in they didn't bleed the lifters, now, I got all kindsa noise from the motor.

Yea its going in for an oil change within the next couple of weeks. I'll have my mechanic take a look at it then. I'd do it myself, but im trying to retain the warranty as much as i can..
