Tranny help Lost 4th gear!!

Today as i was driving home from work, driving as normal, going about 55ish,
downshift into 4th gear to pass a car and get into the exit lane, I hear a big clunk sound,.then lost power in the 4 gear. I upshift back to 5th and everything was find.
After i exited in the smaller road.
This gaves me a chance to test things out, Everything seem find and work like normal in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th, But there is nothing happen in 4th anymore, like if its on neutral. There is no odd sound coming from anywhere at all. Could my 4th gear go out, and every other gear still work just find in my tranny?
My shifter should be moving some type of lever that change something in the gear box to switch it to 4th gear right? If my 4th gear was like cracked or shadder woundnt that effect my gear box? shouldnt i hear clunk noise in the tranny? but i dont hear anything at all. I has a old crolla that lost 5th gear befor,, where when you put it in 5th and it pops out, but nothing like thisa middle gear just gone like this.
If I need a tranny rebuild, how much is this going to cost me? My car is a 03 1st shippment with 88,000 mile on it now. I know i need to take it in for them to take alook at it, but wont have anytime until end of this week, do you think im find driving it for the next few days if there is no noise ?

I would just drive it till it craps out lol, but that's just me. I know someone who drove his eclipse without 3rd pretty much the entire time he had it. 88K miles huh? I'm over 105K now, guess I should start saving up for a tranny rebuild...

I was hoping this dam car was going to hold until winter time, maybe get 1/2 winter out of it, or until the 08 model come out, To get a fair trade in i would have to get a rebuild on the tranny, seem like such a waste of money, lucky for the guy who buys it i guess, they get a newly rebuilt tranny. Iv never race this car or beat on it, I drive
a 90 mile round trip freeway to work each day, 90% of it is on a 70mile per hour road, in 5th gear,The car is park on the weekend, and i only drive my IS300 or the Pilot If i have the kids with me. Odd how the 4th gear goes out when 90% of the time itis on 5th.

You can send it to Shep Racing for a re-build

i can recall at least 3 threads where the owner was cruising in 5th gear then DS into 4th gear to pass and that's when the funny times begin

lesson learned should've left it in 5th gear

seriously that bites bro best of luck getting this diagnosed and you lasted this long is quite impressive...i'm assuming you haven't had synchro repairs done

Sell the car to me for 10,000. Who wants a car with a busted tranny?

Seriously, It sounds like you may have destroyed your fourth gear synchronizer somehow. Send it to shep for a rebuild ($1000).

10 year 10,000k warranty on my IX FTW. Sorry to hear this... first time i read of it on a 5 speed, it's typically the 6 speeds that seem to have 4th gear issues.

I was just going to have the dealership do it. sending it to shep will be more costly I think, but i dont know how much the dealership chrage yet, im taking it in afterwork tonight.
my car is allmost 90k mile on it, plus i have no plan to keep it when the Evo X gets here. If the evoX turns out sucking, Ill just end up geting the Evo9 for a great discount.

I think if the X is sucking then the IX will hold its value very well.

I really don't think so. The IX will depreciate just as the VIII has. The only reason while a car's depreciation would slow down, or even reverse, is because its a rare car that is in high demand, the Evo IX is neither.

You think that removing the transmission, and having it rebuilt by shep ($1000) is going to be more expensive than having a dealership do it? Prepare to be raped with a $3000.00 bill (maybe higher). Do you think the dealership is cheap? They charge on the order of $90/hour for labor!

the dealership will want 1200-1400 just to look at it and inspect it. (take it apart) dont forget about putting it back together with new parts... send it to shep, pay a couple hundy more and get the stuff cryo treated. theres a thread in here somewhere about tranny rebuilds. lists 3 places that do it. prices range from 850 for basic rebuild and up... all are around the same cost. If you were out here in cali, i would say just go to Road Race, i think they have rebuilt boxes sitting there just waiting to be installed.
