I'd care if its minivan, suv, or family seden. But not on sports cars.
You dont really understand how the crash rating system works, do you?

The poor rating didn't bother me until I saw this thread ... https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=278459 ... check out the pinched Recaro on page 2, I think. Let's just say that now I'm more careful when I cross intersections and make left hand turns.

Did I say that the poor rating didn't bother me initially? Well, I really wasn't aware of it until that thread. I researched the car for almost two years before I bought it. The last thing on my mind was body integrity during a collision. I figured that it couldn't be that bad.

Wouldn't better crash ratings lower insurance rates as well?

on the highway and a lady swung into my front end and spun me side ways and then my car felt like it launched forward going sideways on a 75 mph highway "trust me i was doing speed limit if not more"so wasnt a dead on hit but it feltlike it i wish i had pics of the wreck. honestly for that second i wish my car didnt have that good of traction so i would have just keep sliding and delt with just a messed up front fender and headlight or something

All on a over pass.

Whoever said they dont plan on getting in the wreck is dumb. Noone in my family planned on getting in a wreck that ruined our vacation but i guess at least no one died. Some dude messing with his radio and blew through a red light and broadsided us. It wasnt fun. And yes, higher crash test ratings mean lower insurance. my moms brand new 07 altima with the 3.5L v-6 has cheaper insurance than her 05 sentra did because it has 8 airbags and is just sturdier. Be safe out there.

All it takes is one bad wreck (and some common sense) and you will take crash ratings seriously.
When I was 19 I was hit by a drunk driver while driving my (then new) 10k mile Mustang GT. The DD was in a 200sx and ran a red light hitting my car pretty much dead on the drivers side wheel. Not only did my head bust the drivers side window but the sunroof popped out of the open position and shattered on my head. I ended up facing the in the wrong direction. I can remember trying to turn my radio back on and wondering why it wouldn't work. When my friends got me out I noticed the car still looked great from the front of the doors back... the entire front clip including the trans was setting about 10 feet away. The collision was so severe it literally ripped the front sub frame away from its mounting points! I spent a few weeks in the hospital and the accident almost ruined my military career. I lied my *** off on how bad I was really hurt because I didn't want out. The cops estimated the DD was traveling about 70mph when she hit me. There were no skid marks to imply she tried to slow down. Sad part was she was in the Navy and I think that was the end of her career. I wish I knew then what I know now... I got hardly anything since I didn't sue.

Wow, I'm surprised at how it sits right now. 52-70 in favor of not bothering. It surprises me how many don't care about their own safety or of others that may be in the car with them. What a friend! ...
You're right Bonestock!- some folks just have to learn the hard way.

It's an Evo, not a Volvo.

Some people don't drive much, others have their Evo as a second car that they don't drive every day. I wouldn't say it's all ignorant people being unconcerned. For some people, the love of the car outweights the possibility of the risk. Take me for instance: I was nearly killed when I was two years old when my mother's 280ZX flipped over on the highway. I had three skull fractures and now have a plate in my head (hence the name lumpy), but for some reason I love fast japanese cars more than anything, especially the Evo. I have been in more wrecks since then including a dumptruck nearly rolling over on top of me. Toss it up to desensitization, but I love driving fast in a japanese car and despite my past, am still planning on owning an Evo someday. Oh, and I don't mind people being safety scared over the Evo, maybe one of you will toss me a good deal on a used 9 on your way to the Volvo dealership lol.

how does this NOT suprise people that the majority isn't rushing out to trade in their EVO? If it bothers you, FINE, dont drive an EVO!! Like it or not, this is a purpose built car, and its purpose is NOT hauling groceries and kids to soccer practice. Even stock, its loud, its stiff, its jumpy, it accelerates like a ****....the car is what it is, and dont ask it or expect it to be what its not. How many members here seriously bought an EVO just to DD, and have not put a single mod on it? ANd of those people who have no mods, I bet 99% of them have plans to mod. We bought EVO's to go fast, period. If its on the street, at the drag, on the road course, or plowing cones...this car was meant to be driven fast and hard. If you thought having a purpose built semi-race car with 4 doors was a "compromise" then you made the wrong purchase IMHO. Get a BMW, or an Audi, or a Volvo that truly compromises and be happy. But dont expect to get sympathy from me, or by the polls, the majority. There are plenty of fun to drive, safe cars out there to chose from. Just do everyone else on the road a favor and dont go buy some giant tank of an SUV so that you and yours are safe, but in turn make the rest of us unsafe. SUV's are great in crashes....unless YOU are the one being hit. That speeding Tahoe is gonna crush an STi or Volvo like a coke can just as much as a EVO or Daewoo.

In my opinion the EVO is a really weak in terms of accident safety.

I think Mitsu compromised quite a bit of safety for weight savings.

On a side note, side impacts are often fatal.
Frontal or rear have a lot of impact absorbing metal and space. However, the doors are simply thin sheetmetal. There is nothing stopping a car from going through the door and into a passenger.

I don't believe the EVO has any sort of door supports (like volvo) either. Last time I took my door apart I didn't see any.

I'd be fine with "not caring" were it not for the fact that I have a family to think of now.

That's why I rock a Subaru. They may be (slightly) slower, but they're a *lot* safer.

this thread got me thinking! Initially I was planning to use the evo as my daily driver but maybe I'll just use it as a weekend car that
is why I went to the Porsche dealership looking for a Cayenne S for the family that I can also use occasionally. after checking out the 911 carrera 4S, hmmm, maybe they can fit in that back seat?
