+1 My IX does it as well. I bought it with 4 miles on it and it has been doing this noise from day one. Mitsu dealership said it was normal. I didn't believe them so they showed me on another new IX that was on their lot. It did it too at idle. That satisfied my doubt.

My guess is its from the amount of "marcel" in the stock clutch disk that causes the chatter. Any of you former dsm guys are probably familiar with clutch chatter if you had ACT's way back. :-)

I thought clutch chatter was another noise that is only heard when the clutch pedal is pressed in, whereas this noise is with the clutch pedal released. Man it's confusing...when you say a clutch is "released" do you mean the pedal or the clutch itself? When the pedal is pressed in, that "releases" the clutch (which is where the name "release bearing" comes from). But when you release the pedal, it engages the clutch...maybe that's why everyone is so confused.

Anyways the noise I think most of us are talking about happens when you foot is off the clutch pedal, meaning the clutch is engaged. That most likely means the noise is coming from somewhere downstream of the pressure plate in the tranny itself, i.e., some part that is only rotating when the clutch is engaged. Sounds like the previous poster that suggested the input shaft is on the right track.

I wouldn't mistake that noise for suggesting the Evo is "fragile." Now the stock clutch IS known to be fragile, but it's also not what's making the noise (at least one previous poster reports the noise with an after-market clutch). I have never heard problems with any part of the Evo tranny other than the clutch not being able to take punishment.

You are correct. When the clutch is engaged foot off the noise you can hear rattle clank clank etc etc. Clutch in it goes away. I've read alot of posts regarding this and all say its normal. A/C off noise is barely noticeable A/C on different story you can hear it all day long.

I don't know if anyone has brought this up but it is actually a input shaft bearing... Call the dealership they will know what you are talking about... It is actually a TSB...
